Unhappy Flunked Emissions Please Help !

Car did not pass Illinois emission testing. Any help is apprecated. I had heard it could be my ACV that is bad and that there may be an electric air pump from a Corvette that may help. Does anyone know of this part?
I do have a downpipe, do I need to reinstall the front cat.
Thanks,
Ned Schifferdecker

Make sure you don't have to wait in line, that your accessories are turned off and that your car has been driving for 20 or so minutes, 60mph highway being the best.

Well, I failed my idle test when i waited and had my a/c on (to keep temps down) got 2.2 where the limit was 1.2. The second time I passed with 0. There were some things with the idle speed that could have helped the 2nd time, but i don't think that much.

how didn't it pass? sniffer? visual? more details please.

If the car is fully warmed up, you don't need the pre-cat to pass the sniffer. You DO need a working airpump. Also, the tester must not use ANY boost during the test. Actually, how do they test in Illinois, just idle testing or dyno type testing?

It's cheating but you could run the car low on gas and about a half mile away from inspection lane put three bottles of rubbing alcohol in the tank....pass emissions and head directly to the nearest gas station to top off the tank.....works for me every time and I had a helleva time right after a full Pettit rebuild.....good luck

In Illinois it is a dyno test. They run it at idle then simulate around town driving 25-35mph then stop then accelerate to 65mph. The rollers dont seem to offer a lot of resistance. They are easy on the throttle but the car wants to go. It never got into boost, you can see the guage thru the window in the waiting area. They print a graph when done. Basicly the emissions levels spike off the chart every time the car accelerates.

Ok, so I went through the same thing about a year ago in WI.. Our tests are similar..

THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THE DRIVER..
Find someone who can drive stick, and has driven a turbo car, you see boost is not bad but what s probably happening is that the tester, thought he was in a V8, and when the chart says to go faster, and the car doesn’t respond immediately, he mashes the gas pedal to the floor, sending your hc to the roof, the turbos spool and he's going too fast (here in Wisconsin if they deviate from the specific speed line by mode than a few percent the supervisor has to type in an override code. It is your right to reject these results [and you should]).. There is also a catch canister below the throttle body, which can have some gas in it, you need to blow this out with compressed air. Also, any type of fuel additives like octane boost will probably make you fail.. The trick here is that the stock maps for the 7 are so incredibly rich, that unless you step on the gas like a baby's bottom (tell this to the tester who has never seen a 7 before), it just opens them up.. The o2 doesn't do anything until 3000 rpm or so, so your just on the plain fuel map..

find a tester an ask them to be gentile... if they have pre programmed shift points, like they do here, make sure they don’t miss a downshift, and try to keep them from "lugging" it at low rpm..

after I bought my 7, I had to register/inspect in once I got it back to TX, at the inspection I couldn't pass b/c there was a rust hole in the muffler, and my new catback was about 2 weeks away, so I was gonna be damned if I was going to spend a chuck putting on a new muffler for 2 weeks. Greased the guy's palm with a $20, and my 7 passed with flying colors. This will also help down the road if you decide to midpipe your 7, because eliminating the catalytic converter is quite illegal for street cars.

but can you just slip a guy some money on emissions testing? do they not have to record the exact results of it?

The Illinois standards are 0.80 HC and 15.0 CO My car did 2.58 HC and 30.0 CO I have an intake DP Bonez main cat and a Pettit intercooler. Fuel injectors have been serviced by RC Eng. new plugs, new vacuum hoses, wires etc. It runs great. It will tend to want to idle at 1100RPM. It smokes a bit on startup after sitting for a week but I am sure it is just the turbos leaking a bit. If it is driven daily no smoke. Boost is good. Vacuum at 750 RPM is 20 at 1100 18. I dont know the history of the car it was a drug dealers ride. It has109000 mi. but I know it has been rebuilt oil pressure is perfect runs 12s with severe wheel hop at launch, wins auto-X no problem, gives the best a run for their money at track events, even real race cars.

Anyone on here from KY? I own property there and could easily licence it there. Is there emissions testing in Trigg County?

In Illinois we can't bribe the test people, they have special test centers with cameras and supervisors all over the place, all recorded.

I'd honestly (can I use that word since I'm talking about bribig? how ironic) mention to whovere is doing the testing, that, "hey, I need to update my inspection, but I dont think my aftermarket parts will pass, is there ANY way I can get it done without spending 2 days switching out the stck parts? You may even be able to get him to just slip you a sticker, and not even test it. Hope this helps...
