fixed my drivers side storage bin, cheep

my storage bin was broken and i didnt want to buy another one so i used some glue, rivits, and made an alluminum cover to it and i think i came out well. also while doing it i decided to do somthing about the ate up door trim. the rubber coating was rubbing off pretty bad. it took a scotch bright pad to it and got it ready for paint. not thinking about it i grabed some brakeleen sprayed some on a old shirt and rubbed on the trim. the out come slightly melted the scratch markes away and polished it up. sence this trim peace will be gittin rubbed on and the out come looked alright i left it that way.

i though id share.

I'm pretty worthless when it comes to working on my own car, so when I see you guys coming up with little fixes like this, it impresses me.

Not bad.

also the bins hidge broke off causing the lid to be thrown into the seat were i would then accedently sit on it breaking it. i drilled out wear it used to connect and put a rivit in so the lid wont be flying anywere now.

Good start on fabricating your own repairs. If it works for you, works for me. Good eye !

good idea but the rivets just throw it off for me. i thinka better option would have been to to use a very strong epoxy in the middle of crack and more on the inside..bondo the crack or plastic filler. then sand to smooth finish. and theeennn use duplicolor int spray paint cause it matches the interior trim color better.

good luck

A suggestion.......another weak point is the pivots which can be reinforced with a bit of fiberglass resin if they've not broken already.

Yah, I agree, without the rivets, the "look" would be perfect. It just doesn't seem to match. But great job none the less.

Honestly, if you painted the whole driver plastic the door cubby would look WAYYY better. It's an effective solution, I guess, but still needs some work to look great.

mine broke also....

i super glued it back together, then sanded and re-painted it with krylon plastic bonding semi-gloss black. it doesn't match perfectly, but it looks better than being broken. i plan on resurfacing all of my interior pieces soon because that rubber/paint covering is coming off (i have a '93)

here's mine after fixing it. you can see on the underside where it was cracked in half. the super glue seems too have fused the two pieces back together pretty well.

i used the alluminum to streagthen it because its right were my elbow sits, i didnt think it would hold up if i glued it and painted the top. i mainly did it to have a solution for the broken bin lid with out spending anything.

the bin lid is rivited to the bin i had to reattach it because it broke there too.

also i decided not to paint the rest of the trim because it gets touched alot and i didnt want it to chip. if just the bin gets chipped its and easy and fast fix. besides i kinda like the two tone look.
