First Time, missing during warm up

well, this is my first official post, sorry for the retardness of my unexperienced questions. I tried a couple of searches to avoid hazing, but didn't find what I wanted so I figured I would just ask the questions here and accept a little grilling.
First- is the car supposed to miss during warm up, I have a 93 automatic (that was a mistake) and everytime it warms up it misses until the rpm's drop to 1k.
Second- I took it to the track about a month ago, just to see what it would do, and ran a 16.3 at like 89mph. I thought that I wasn't getting boost above 4,500 because that seems to be a common issue, but it sure sounds like it's getting boost. I haven't put a gauge on it yet.
Third- I bought the car from my uncle, who has an R1, he said that they had a block in the pre-cat, got a down pipe put in after the car had been running poorly for a little while (don't know exactly how long) my question is, did having the blockage do some damage to the motor.
Well, I would appretiate any help I can get. I've been looking around the site for about three weeks now and I'm absolutley amazed at how well run it is and how much people know and are willing to help out the best they can. Thanks again.
Luke

Are you talking about a stumling of the engine during warm up? This is normal as the engine warms up. There is a brief period during the idle come-down where the engine stumbles, then smooths out. Let the car warm up until the idle smooths out, then off you go

Get the gauge, as everyoune will tell you. Can't tell what's going on until you do, although half the time you STILL can't figure out what up!

The clogged pre cat shouldn't have hurt anything...

WELCOME aboard

"Get the gauge"

Whats that mean? What guage upgrade should we newbies be looking for? Are you talking about a boost guage?

Thanks a lot for the help spurvo, I figured it probably had something to do with the seals not touching until the metal was fully heated up or something.
Speed7 he was talking about a boost gauge, are you new to the scene as well?

If the pre-cat was clogged, it may have taken out your main cat as well. Get a boost gauge and see what you're getting.

As a side note, you may as well pick up a water temp gauge while you are at it. The stock gauge is not linear and basically functions as an idiot light. The needle will sit at the middle position from about 130F to over 225F. Once it starts moving, you are probably already overheating.

Thanks for the help rynberg, I was thinking about replacing the cat or just removing it because I don't think that they do emissions testing in FL. Thanks for the tip about the gauge. Is there a good way to mount them other them putting one of those pillar pods in? Hopefully I will be able to get my hands on at least a boost gauge by this weekend.
Again, thanks for the help.

Removing the main cat is a very serious mod for an FD. Do some researching about "midpipe". IMO, it's really stupid to remove the main cat without an aftermarket ecu. I'll go farther and say you should really have a stand-alone ecu and larger injectors to safely run a midpipe.

As far as gauge mounting goes, you can mount them in a single DIN panel above or below your stereo OR you can pick up a center-speaker pod from "flyrx7", which is what I did.

Check them out here:

(BTW, Frank, you should start sending me commission... )

Thanks again for the help rynberg, I have another cat that I'm going to try and put in this weekend if I have the chance. I really like that speaker pod, but I'm not sure if it is in the budget for right now, hopefully soon. I really mean thanks, if you wouldn't have said anything I probably would have pulled the pipe out this weekend and it sounds like that probably would have caused some serious detonation issues or something. So I really do appretiate the help. Thanks

Glad to help.

Once you get your car working reliably, spend a LOT of time reading this forum and the sites listed in the newbie sticky. You will learn a lot about how the car works and what general overall mods are the best (and the strategy for applying them).

Good luck.
