First Drive of a RX7
I just wanted to share my experience that I had today with you all. This morning my father and I were chilling in a cafe and I was reading in the classifieds "1993 Mazda RX-7. New Engine. 17,000 obo". So I tell my dad and he just nods because cars don't interest him at all. We go home and realize there is not a single thing to do at all during the scrorching summer day that it is. My dad says "did you write down the number on that mazda?" , I reply with "no, I thought you weren't interested.", He says "I'm not, but aren't you?" So look the car up on the online classifieds and call on it. We arrange a time and my father and I set off to find the home where it is at. I get there to find a friendly woman just finishing washing the car. The family happily greets my father and I and proceeds to explain the the car's life story to us both. I am bad at names so I cannot remember what their names were. We come to an end in the conversation and I ask if we can take a test drive. the owner responds with "only if you want to". The obvious answer belched from my mouth fast than he could finish his response. Of course I want to drive the first RX-7 in my life as soon as possible. The man who was the real owner accompanied me on the test drive and my dad stayed at the home because he had a call on his phone. Let me tell you that my jaw dropped just putting the car in first gear. This was one of the nicest sports car I have driven. The solid feel of quality was illuminating from the car. The car felt like it cost forty thousand brand new. The man was anxious to show the cars potential and told me to feel the second turbo kick in. We proceed to take it onto the freeway and we got to 90 but traffic up ahead brought us back down to a decent 60. We come up to the exit to bring me back from paradise and end my wonderful drive in a wonderful car. The recommended speed of the corner on the exit was 20, the owner advised me to go 45. Not at any point durning the turn did I hear a tire make any sort of sound. These car are dirt cheap for what they are capable of. Im sorry I made such a large story out of a small event during my day. But I turn 18 in 9 and my 4 year goal was to get one during my 18th year of existence. Hopefully graduation money will come into play. I have had massive respect for these cars ever since seeing them at local autocross (nearly 4 years ago when I because interested in motorsports). Now I realize why this is such a popular site because it is hard not to craze about these cars. They have ascended to a new tier of respect in my life after actually piloting one. Thank you

hey snook. I think you took what I said the wrong way. I know they sold for 40k new, I am just saying that they are a car that is worth 40k new. Unlike a lot of cars that are out. Like a 350z will be 20k in a few years and that sets their quality to worth ratio in the right area. So what I drove it and wasn't going to buy it. The people didn't seem to mind. Did you ever use a restaurants bathroom and never get anything to eat. Jesus. I hardly ever post and when I do **** heads like you like to hand out the ****.

sorry fellas. I thought I would share my story. I know my remark about snook was immature and I apologize for my actions. I won't post on here anymore. By the way, I didn't tell the man selling the car that I might buy it or anything. I told him upfront I was looking around at 7s and this one is too expensive I am just using it as a reference to compare to. I know you guys will probably tell me "why did you look at it then" or something just because of the fact that I am young or something, then youll mention the fast and the furious and tell me I am a punk or something. This will be my last post in the FD forum.

I thought it was a good story of someone truly appreciating this car that we are so BLESSED to own. I personally test drove 5 or 6 cars before I found the one that I wanted. Everyone of use goes to car dealerships trying to trest drive a vette or a m3 or any sports car for that matter so dont knock the kid for doing research even if he did just want to drive the car it was the owners decision to let him do so. If no one ever let you drive a fd before you bought then you probably wouldnt own one. I think your story is good and when you guys slam some one it might not be as good as you thought because this kid now is never gonna post again. So go easy on people and remember that you were once in his shoes as well.

Blessed to own? I paid for my car I wasn't blessed with it, and I was a car salesman for quite awhile and never once did I have someone come in and try and just test drive a high performance car, in fact getting people to test drive cars is one of the hard parts of the job, because people know if they drive it they will buy it. Really you shouldn't waste peoples time looking at a car if you aren't planning to buy; and if it was me and you weren't serious about buying my car, I wouldn't let you drive it, but the owner was cool about it, and theres nothing wrong with that, glad you enjoyed the car, but for someone with not much money it doesnt make a good college car, unless you can afford to pay insurance on 2 cars, pay for gas, pay for repairs. They aren't cheap to own, especially since almsot all of them have a good amount of mileage on them now.

I liked the story, and was glad he took the time to write it. How many of our young members can write something that long, without making us curse them for their grammar or spelling. If the owner of the car knew that he wasn't buying, and still let him drive it, why would anyone have a problem with that?
Elmo, don't disappear because of a little criticism.

elmo, great story! Dont leave the forum because of some ******** always have to put people down. As for driving a car that you arent willing to buy, i used to do it allllll the time. Them god damn car sales men have it coming to them anyways. When was the last time you went to the dealership and bought a car for less then what it is accually worth. If the man selling the car had no problem with him testing the car out for personal experiance, then i say that was a nice thing of him to do. By the way, if he grinds the clutch a little or bangs the tranny up, or whatever. He is only gonna sell the car to someone else anyways, he wont have the problem. In fact i think im gonna drive my FD up to the mazda dealer and pretend like i am interested in buying an RX8, see what happens.

You were at the BBQ with your new 3d gen right?
elmo: don't stop posting cause of me its just what came to mind. Was a good story though why don't you make it a goal to get one since you liked it so much? My car's for sale and I won't let anyone test drive it unless they come with cash...
guys don't do that ****. I want to drive a rx-8 but why lie to the salesman when I know I won't buy it. If he knows that I wont buy it and then wants me to drive it then that's cool.

Snook- Frankie has a red 93 with i believe its 18 inch NZO rims or something. Lives close to Dave in Valrico. His car was on a stock ECU- with a straight 3 inch exhaust when i test drove it. Dave said he was even running it without the intake box before he started to sell it!
And yes, i was at the meet in my 3rd gen.

I worked my butt off as well to own the car that I own but I still feel that I am blessed to own this car. No one deserves the car that we have and just cause you worked hard to own it you should realize that you are blessed to have a job that you can afford that car. I too sold cars and from my experiences I did have people coming in just to drive cars and at the dealership that I worked at if someone wanted a test drive we were required to take them so I was going off my experiences. Sorry if I was misunderstood. But you have to realize that you are blessed to own the vehicle that you own because it can be taken from you at any moment without any regaurds to you. Take time to go to a third world country and see what you have that they dont and then come back and tell me that you arent blessed. Ive been and I take everything I have forgranted. Just food for thought but you are blessed to own an fd. You are one of 7000 people to own this car(I think thats how many are left).

Sorry about that elmo908 Mike please continue posting more in the 3d gen section and more importantly start looking for a 3d gen of your own! That was honestly a sweet story. Make sure to be careful when you get your 3d gen.
If you have any questions post or feel free to pm me.
Yes we are all fortunate to have lots of little things even...A car is a frigen luxery!

If I don't purchase one between now and my 18th birthday, my father will help me with the purchase by giving me a loan. I just wanted to work for it and earn it myself because everything that I obtain that way ends up being much more appreciated. Sorry about getting upset, I just never post and I feel like I am 3rotorrocket or something because Every aspect of my story was initially criticized. You were all kids once and you know you couldn't afford an RX-7 back then. I am just shopping around. Hell if that car is still for sale in 4 months it may be mine. Thank you and good day.

ahwww, where is he? come back elmo.....i'll make you giggle
My first time to drive an rx7 was similar. I'd wanted one ever since they came out. And I was finally in the right place in my life to afford one. There is a sort-of, low-end dealership in my area. I had seen this black 93 r1 there for 8 months. I looked at it a few times, beat to hell. The salesman was nice, I told him I was looking for one. Although there was no way in hell I'd buy that one, he knew. I wanted to take it for a drive. There's a first time for everything. I was by myself, so i asked to take it out. He said sure, and he said i could take it ALONE. We tried to start it and it didn't want to work, (not a good sign). He gave me one of those little jumper batteries, and it cranked to life. I kept it in case I was out and it didn't want to start again. Plus, I needed to get gas, so he gave me the lots gas card (i know). So, I filled up with a quarter tank, and i was off! First light i came to, i was stopped at the front of the pack. Pole Position, Wahoo!! On the other side of the intersection, in the median, were those orange barrels we all know and love. As those barrels go past, each one makes a whoosh sound in you ears. Remember, if you will, the exhilaration of your first time you hit the throttle in your 7 fingers of your left hand tightly wrapped around the leather steering wheel. The shift **** gently arousing the tactile sensations in your right. Forearm resting on the warm transmission tunnel, as if it's finally found its home. Left calf straining to keep the clutch in, right foot ready to lay down the law. Eyes gazing on the open lanes in front of you. The light was green and so were the people to the right of me. I was grinning ear to ear. (I'll never stop being amazed at the lines of this beautiful machine.) I went somewhat easy through first, yeah right! I had the windows down, whoosh; there goes the first barrel, whoosh, the second. Each barrel coming faster and faster, shift, brow furrowed, eyes focused ahead. Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, starting to merge to a constant resonance the higher the needle climbed, and the louder the exhaust roared. Soon, barrel twenty had come and gone. Although it had only taken five seconds, it will forever be in slow motion for me.
i wont bore you with the rest of the drive, windy mountain road, drifting here and there. From then on it was sealed. I bought the next one i looked at, a week later. Luckily, i found a completely stock, white '94 touring show car. 39874 on the speedo. Been my baby ever since. She's been gone for 3 months now. No, i didn't sell her. My motor went out, and I'm $15k poorer. One month to go though. Waiting on pineapple and a-spec.
I apologize for the long post, it just brought back memories, and i will cherish mine, and my car forever. You will too elmo.
Nothing beats the small blessings of open roads, and a true sports car.
thanks.

good story elmo - sorta sounds similar to the first time i drove an FD...
don't let the guys get you down.
i'm sure if you work hard you will own one one day and you WILL appreciate it more if you earn it yourself. I personally would be happy knowing that someone with your respect and admiration for the car would be an owner to one. In the mean time, read EVERYTHING you can about the car and the motor.....it will treat you well and increase your appreciation for the engineering that went into it.
