filling the tranny

So the engine is back in the car, along with the transmission. I noticed that there are two places to put oil into the tranny, which one do i fill? can i get away with just filling one? i dont have the correct tool to remove one of the plugs.

There should be a port on the side of the trans. Pretty sure it's marked. Fill it until it starts to back flow and then quickly put the bolt back in.

If you're talking about the huge torx plug, that's just an inspection port not a fill spot. You fill from the upper plug that can be pulled with a box wrench.

Actually, BOTH are fill plugs. There are 2 drain plugs and 2 fill plugs. To really do the job right, you need to fully drain the tranny, remove both fill plugs, fill until oil comes out of one of the holes, then close that up and fill the other hole until it's full.

There's kind of a "wall" in the transmission, that's why they put 2 fill plugs and 2 drain plugs in there.

If you don't have the right tool, go get one . It's a T-50 Torx, you can buy just that Torx bit that goes on a socket wrench at most auto parts places. Never turn down an opportunity to buy tools .

I've looked in the manual many times and I've never seen mentioning of filling through both holes. It mentions only the "filler port" for filling from what I've read. What page talks about filling through both?

Not necessary. There are pass-thrus between all three chambers of the transmission.

See the attachments.

Well, the "two plugs" thing is a leftover from my FC days - TurboII's had 2 fill plugs, and you had to do both. I figure better safe than sorry.

Having the second hole open also makes things go easier - air can quickly escape through the second hole as you pump gear oil in to the first hole.

Take a hose and run it from the filler port up into the engine bay by the brake booster. Put a funnel on it and let gravity do the work.

Make sure the oil isn't cold. If you get the containers a little warm it will flow a whole lot better. Cold gear oil = really, really long time to fill the tranny.

Just did my diff and tranny with Royal Purple last night. I bought a little hand pump that you screw onto the quart bottle and connect a clear line to. It made it alot easier. picked it up from the local Pep Boys for 8.99.

I got one for the wife's ATF at pepboys or advance or something. It has a twist valve so you can stop it without making too much of a mess.

A pump can also be found at any boating supply store like West Marine. They sell them for filling the foot of an outboard engine with gear oil. I had one already for my boat. Screws right on top of the transmission fluid container, put the hose in the filler hole of the tranny, and then you just pump it like a soap dispensor. Easy as pie.

It is a "Outboard Motor Lower Section Oil Pump"
It is made by PowerBuilt and is part number 648960. They are located in Long Beach California and their website is www.powerbuilttools.com or customer service number 1-800-423-3598.
I got all the info off the packaging the handpump came in. Hope this helps...

BTW... I purchased longer clear tubing from the local Home Depot. The tubing that comes with the hand pump isn't long enough.
