The auto FD starter is 2.0kw, the Cosmo starter is basically the same part (if not the same). I am not at the shop right now to compare the two

 

Before and after video of my FD starting with the stock and RX8 starter, this thing stsrts almost by just looking at the key.

Pretty simple to swap the parts, it took me about 1 hour from the time I jacked the car up to RE installing new starter, and had lunch in between.

 

Just to make it clear the only you will be using out of the FD starter is the nose aluminum casing, you must swap everything else from the rx8

For the DIYers be sure to inspect the brass bushing in the DE Frame (nose), when the bushing is overly worn out it damages the groove for the carrier.

We replace the bushings with new ones when building the FD 2.0 KW starters. Currently working on sourcing a roller bearing replacement.

 

No, probably will be a few weeks, as there are other projects to work on first.

 

Sorry bro, but I'm having a difficult time differentiating much between those two videos . Didn't really crank enough in the second video for me to hear the difference.

 

Try listening again. The engine cranks over soo much faster it starts quicker in the second vid. I never really had problems with cold starting with the old starter. It was when everything was hot that it got very weak. Hot starts almost made me feel my battery was draining and weak. The new one is much, much stronger and never lugs. Now I still do have hot starting hiccups but, have now found out that it's my old used Ls1 coils are giving me problems. The engine has no power above 4k and getting worse. Im hearing all kinds of misfiring. So I'm buying those Mercury Marine IGN-1A ignition coils this week to fix that problem.

 

Got it Trey, so is anyone concerned about faster cranking when the engine has not started yet and oil pressure is low? Has anyone addressed this topic yet?

 

^ Tim I really dont think that's a problem. Mazda did nothing to the series 1 Rx8 when they started factory upgrading to the stronger starters. I mean unless somones car sits up for months at a time, that would be the only way to loose oil retention on the bearings. Besides, I'm one of those that let the fd do its thing with the stock AWS system. After over 100k on the original engine, my bearings were in perfect condition.

 

Did you guys change any wiring or fuses after doing this upgrade?

 

No wiring added or changed.

 

FWIW I have a relocated Braile B3121 in the rear bin with 2 gauge cable going direct to stater and then to fuse box.

 

^Which is the best way to do it, I see cars all the time in the shop (and this forum), where people have run the cable all the way to the original battery terminal, then used a half of a roll of black tape to try to cover it up (even worse just leave the 12V+ terminal exposed in the engine bay)
