Well that is odd. I found a listing for that seller(when I was looking for an rx8 starter) that showed a starter that would fit both an rx8 and "93-96" rx7. I didn't find this credible for the obvious reasons.
But I just searched their listings for RX7 and yes they do show both a 1.2kw and a 2.0 kW starter for rx7. Although if you look closely you can see that the solenoid is clocked the same as a rx8 starter which means they probably are selling the 8 starter as a replacement for the 7 starter. Maybe they think it will work because it's almost the same.
Whatever it is, it's brand new and around 135 right now. Then you could easily transfer all the new parts and bigger motor to your FD gear housing. With no core charge.

 

anyone know if this same mod can be done to a TII starter?

 

The starter from an S4/S5 Auto Trans will interchange with the T2 starter, direct fit. And, per the FSM, is 2kw. But I don't know the number of teeth on it. I think I have one in my storage, but it will be tomorrow before I can look.

 

i have been posting it for years.. the auto ( N327) long case starter is direct exchange and upgrade for the 13bt manual starter ( N318 )

which undoes a few theories about the engagement too

 

I replaced my starter a couple years back with an import parts replacement brand. Only issue I had was the nose was different and I just had to change it with the one I had. Fires up quickly so I guess I got lucky.

I have had this problem with lots of parts. With my alternator I had to change the pulley from my new one with my old stock one. Belts that 'should' fit never do (aside from the one on the alternator).

 

Nice, easy to do upgraded.

I have several starters That I have collected over the years so I did some research by disassembling a few to see what will interchange. I did a FC Turbo, FC auto tranny, FC NA, and a RX8 starter.

N318 Turbo, has a 13 tooth gear and a 1.2kw motor.
N327 Auto Trans, has a 12 tooth gear and a 2kw motor, this will fit a turbo as is
N326 NA 12 Tooth gear and a 1.2kw motor, this will only fit a NA tranny
N3H1 a RX8, from its size its is a 1.2kw motor.

I found that all the motors will fit any of the noses.

Now I wonder how many different cars use this same design of a starter. There might be an even bigger motor on some "big block" Japanese car out there, since Mitsubishi made all of them or just about all.

 

if you look in the parts catalog, you'd see that the Rx8 1.2kw starter uses the FC part numbers, except for the nose.

i wouldn't be surprised if there are a bunch of other cars that use the same motor and possibly gears.

I am a bit confused. I see FC information posted here on 3rd specifics.

In summary, you need RX8 starter motor to upgrade the RX7 starter.

Am I understanding this right?

Also Banzai, Does your starter come with warranty?

 

Sorry, but nobody is going to warranty a product that you are disassembling to modify a different part.

This is why we have 2.0KW FD starters already built, that do come with a 1 year warranty. However they are more expensive since we have to disassembly both starters, put the FD gear housing through our ultrasonic cleaner and then reassemble and test. We also need a core returned to us.

when swapping the heads you dont really need to pull the back off the armeture and expose the brushes etc..
you just swap the entire motor section off the rear, intact by removing it at the long bolts


however
most of the time on s/h starters you will need an impact driver to loosen the solenoid screws as they are tight and easy to strip

if you lack the driver, then tapping with a hammer on the end of the screwdriver while you twist on the head with some vice grips can do the trick

if you have the fork out for the solenoid, re-grease it at the pivot

 

^ Agree! No need to pull the back off. It's a pain to put back on and there is a good chance you can damage the carbon brushes or the springs when putting back on. The carbon brushes are pretty brittle and can easily chip or crack.

The way I removed the solenoid screws, I used the fattest philips screwdriver that will fit snuggly in the screw head, put some weight against it and turn the screwdriver using an adjustable wrench.

I've done it this way with at least 6 or 7 starters already

 

Just got my RX8 starter today rebuilt cost me 65.00 shipped, now to swap the parts. Thanks to Andre for posting this great info.

 

I pulled the trigger on an Rx8 starter from Banzai Racing. Mine gets very weak and causes too much voltage drop when it's hot. Lets see how much better that 20b of mine starts with it.

^My current fd starter actually does great when cold. It's just when I do a hot start 5mins after shutdown on a hot day that I start having major problems with voltage drop. I have a Braile b3121 battery in the bin. My Ls1 coils wont fire at anything below 10v so the engine tries to flood.

Oh yea would you happen to know what the 20b starter is rated at?
