FD runs without the key in when the ignition is off!?

hi guys,

so i've been driving my FD for the first day and its already been pretty hectic. first the idle is all messed as i described in this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/fd-idle-question-713092/

when i parked the car just now, i had forgotten to turn off the headlights, no biggie. but when i turned the ignition off with my key the engine still runs! it runs with the key out and everthing, i can put it in gear and drive away. i had to stall the car in order for it to shut off. but once the headlights are turned off and down, the car will shut off just fine when i turn the key and remove it.

i searched and searched and came up with nothing, what gives?

please help

thanks

Did you replace the motor yourself?
you could have hooked up a vacuum line wrong or did you reuse a old intake gasket?
It sounds like you have a very big vacuum leak. Maybe you rolled a fuel injector grommit on the intake side(that would cause a vacuum leak).
Okay here what to try to do, go buy a can of propane(the stuff you use to torch with the torch fitting)(http://nosheteria.com/Blowtorch.jpg).

Turn the blowtorch on without lighting the gas and have the car running. Now let just a little gas come out a little at a time and run it over the intake filter and if it's enough gas the idle should change. After getting the right gas amount then go all around the intake system. If you go over the area where the leak is the idle should raise or change.

This quick process can also be done with brakeclean or carbcleaner as well but I like my blowtorch idea. Just a recap the car has to be running while you do this, do not fill the intake manifold with propane and then start the engine! This test is a very very fast test do not leave the propane on for a while, once you find the leak stop using it.

I don't accept any responsibility if something happens while your doing this process.

Goodluck

can it be a electric problem? its just weird that a vaccum leak can cause the car not to turn off?

...sounds like a hidden turbo Timer or electric problem.

unmount all covers on the dashboard. Check the white Connector on the left side of the steering column if there's a plug-in harness of a turbo timer, and check the cables of the ignition lock. Maybe there's a short circuit...

Definitely an electrical problem (might be a problem in the ignition switch, itself) - vacuum leaks, etc., cannot cause the engine to not shut off, except for the case of "running on" or "dieseling" which I have never heard of in a rotary.

Does the key pull out while it is still running without turning the car off. This while odd is likely a bad switch on the inner column. Is it a 93? While not logical it happened to me on my FC and a Nissan car which uses the same parts. Most likely you need a new starter switch which is a tough repair.

Something is wrong with the ignition or the wiring along those lines.

Its not a turbo timer as the car will shut off if you attempt to drive the car away.

But did he say if the headlights are off, then the car will shut off fine?

If so, def electrical problem.
