R12 is more expensive, but a full charge of freon doesn't cost that much. I recently had a high pressure line on my car get a hole in it from the pipe rubbing against a metal coolant pipe and I lost all the freon. Changed the pipe out with new O-rings, took it to a shop, and they pulled a vacuum and charged it with 1 pound 4 oz of R-12 - total cost out the door was $125. VERY cheap for ice-cold AC.
If you'd like to know a bit more about AC and the FD, read part 1 of my article on the topic -

by the way if your car came with R-12 and someone in the past have it changed over to R-134a there should also of be a sticker saying it was changed over. at least thats what your suppose to do when you do the conversion, just so the next person will know. either that or if your really dont know check the high and low side connectors and see if its a R-134a fitting or a R-12

R12 is way more expensive, and you have to be certified to buy it.
There are some awesome deals for R12 kits on eBay... of course you better be certified!

Given the availability of freon on eBay (at about $25 per can), there is no good reason to switch to R134a that I can think of.
