FD Manual Trans counter shaft bearing/spacer

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a replacement front countershaft bearing spacer (Bearing p/n: R502-17-306A). For some reason, the spacer hung up on the snap ring groove when I pulled the bearing, and broke the outer lip from it (it didn't just slide out as others have suggested!).

The factory parts fische doesn't list this part (only the bearing, rear shim, and snap ring), so, wondering what my options are here?

Apologies if this is adressed elsewhere. I did a search but couldn't find anything relevent.

Thanks in advance.

are you referring to 17-327 in this diagram (lower LH corner)?

If so then this is what I see listed:

Nah, that's the thin adjustment shim. This one goes into the inner race of the bearing, and it is pressed onto the countershaft.

it wasn’t really clear what you were asking and I haven’t specifically ever torn into one of these before.

However they don’t show one in the transmission service manual either, but I did find this from the manual. Seems to suggest it comes as part of the bearing assembly:

Yeah it's kind of hard to explain it, as I haven't seen it referenced in any tear down write-ups. It's basically a collared sleeve, and yes, I think part number 31 is the piece I'm looking for, although it seems to be orientated differently to what my transmission had. In the pics above, you can see the collar behind the snap ring, and then, see the collar broken off the sleeve in the other pic. I managed to get the broken sleeve off the end of the shaft, but not without a fight. Thanks for your help. From those pics I have determined it is M505-17-316R (was R502-17-316).

Be aware there's been changes through nearly every other version in that area, too fuzzy in my mind to remember what it looks like inside after 10 or more years.. With you from Au and a good chance it's a V6 s8 you're working on, might check the diagram here https://mazda.epcdata.ru/rx-7/ajfa08...smission/1710/....V5 specs 3 different!

Hmm, 316D is indicated for the bearing at the rear of the countershaft on the 93-95 USD parts diagrams. Is it possibly different on JP versions or later years?

this was the US parts info for it

if the bearings are same width and OD, did somebody maybe use the wrong parts on the wrong end? Why would they be different though? Unless one bearing is a taper style to resist the directional force of the angled gear teeth? A mystery indeed. 🤔

the 99+ catalog shows 17-316 at the front,

part number is M505-17-316 or M507-17-316. the M505-17-316 is the only one available in the US, they also used it as the spacer when they changed the M type trans from a double row ball to roller bearing in the center countershaft
