This thread made me feel good about buying my rx7. I haven't really gotten to enjoy driving it because I just bought it. It's hibernating at the moment, but I miss her every time I leave the garage so I stare at an fd pic on my phone until I get off.

A while back I mentioned in another thread that I quit trying to make my car "faster" a long time ago. Now I just focus on making it "better". IMO there's a difference. It's also cheaper and way more fun than looking at it sitting in the garage or at the shop.
I totally agree. My focus is to maintain it and make it better. Little details that real car guys will notice not just how much boost I'm running and how much hp it has.

How does it ride, interior fit and finish, engine bay details, well done mods, etc. Things that make it a nice car.

Someone will always be faster at the track, you gotta be happy with what you have.

EXACTLY, could not have said it better. The details that the REAL car guys notice. Paint/body work, panel fitment, proper setup per owners uses. You nailed it

I'm on the other spectrum , I really dont care to muh about how nice my car rides , or how nice my interrior looks .

I rather how a car feels ..

ALSO ... I do plan to be the fastest guy on the track..

with that being said I'm not trying for power , i rather reliability over power LOL ...

Iv had my fd for 8 years. Ran stock motor turbos for 7 years. Never really contemplated selling it, but started to get burned out with the same power and looks.

Recently, I decided to actively learn and research about the mechanics of the vehicle. This is definitely a way to reignite your interest. Pulled my motor, swapped in a ported block and built a 550hp setup, did a bunch of supporting mods and completely transformed the car into a total monster.

Did i spend way to much cash? Yes. Do I regret any minute if it? Hell no.

Im literally obssessed with the feeling of understanding such a mysterious vehicle that everyone else will never have the patience to learn. Its inspired me to work on restoring and selling other 90s vehicles and has sparked a potential part time side job opportunity.

FD aalways for the win.

All ya gotta do is go drive the thing to your local MAZDA dealer...maybe you need to pick up an oil filter or spark plugs. And when everyone from new car shoppers to the salesmen stop what they are doing to come over and ogle your car, and you hear comments like, "I've actually never seen one in person...", you'll do the right thing and keep the car.

Haha, so true. Everytime I go to the dealer, I end up wiping drool off the car.

We all know the story.
Two guys have 3k in their pockets. One guy buys a turbo kit, the other goes to Skip Barber. When all's said and done, guess which guy gets around the track quickest?

...The one in the FD, that's who!!

I have been thinking of selling mine lately as a roller with a good engine. Having fuel injector problems and have absolutely no desire to get to the root of the problem with all of the disassembly needed to get to the heart of the matter. Took me 3 freaking months to take out the old engine and put in a new one. Spent 4K on new parts alone just to have it run 2K miles and then go kaput.....

It is posts like these that keep me from doing it. Not to mention how the car handled like a dream in the turns when it was running last.

Funny you should mention that...
Ordered a new pressure cap thru the local dealer not long ago. After they called I went to pick it up and it took 45 minutes to get out of there. I enjoyed it of course, but it got me thinking....these guys see all kinds of cool automobiles all day long (it's also a Porsche dealer), but even the Service Manager and (I think) the GM came out and wanted to look and ask about my (20 yr old) car.

Yes, it is one of the things that makes the FD special to this day. The limited run of ~15,000 cars, with the last ones now 18 - 19 years old obviously contributes to the rarity. It's kind of like seeing a Toyota 2000 GT or an XKE Jaguar; enthusiasts just can't get enough, and the Average Joe is simply grateful to see one.

I've had my fd for almost a year and I've spent twice on parts what I paid for the car. I've only driven it around my block twice since it's not finished yet but I don't think I could ever sell it. The way i see it is that I have a car that's paid off, motor has 2 miles on it if that, it's rare, it's sexy and it still costs me less to own and work on than most new cars.

I get the same feeling once and a while. You just spend so much money on it. BUT I still have it. The car still gets crazy eyeball looks and I still love driving it. I will admit that I am planning a demod to bring back some of the civility. But the car is staying. Winter has to be seen as an opportunity. Work on things that don't really need a lot of money (or do). Interior clean ups, wire harness mods and other time consuming but relatively cheap things. That's my plan for the winter.

winter comes and goes but your FD will always be around, that being said hopefully locked up and secure in your garage when not in use. i had my first FD for only 9 months money was tight and sold it when my engine blew, from that day when it leave the drive way on a flat bed to another home i felt terrible but two years later i purchased another and spent twice the money on it.

if you think of the money end of things it will always seem to overwhelm you. dont think about the money think of the days when you get that nice curvy road and its you the your beast and all negative thoughts leave the cockpit.

i almost like not driving my rx7 cause i appreciate it so much more when i do drive it and how one simple thing can make me so happy at times

i have thoughts like this sometimes.

the key is to get an additional car; a QUALITY daily driver car. FDs were not meant to be driven daily. they were made to be track cars and/or weekend hammer cars.

any time i'm bored with the car, i go get on the interstate, get the exhaust nice and hot in 3rd gear, and shoot fire out of my exhaust at unsuspecting motorists. this keeps the relationship lively.

Great thread Dont know how it turned into an FD vs Lambo argument though

I know its no comparison, But, I miss my A4 Quattro every day I don't have it for the past 2 years.

That is exactly why I bought the FD and I probably will never sell it if I am able to keep hold

I agree.... to a point. Unless you have the house and the bank account to go it, otherwise you end looking like a douche.

MOBEONER,

If you end up selling it chances are you will be back. This car is an addiction you know it and I know it.

Oh and as far as selling the car. For me: Nope, never gonna happen. I've been an FD owner for almost 16 years and I haven't looked back. I bought my first FD in May of 1998 and I didn't even know it was a rotary lol. Funny thing is that prior to my purchase I had no interest in fast cars. I just wanted something nice to drive and I had always liked the Rx-7's, so I test drove one and was instantly hooked. Seriously I hadn't even driven 200 feet when I already knew I wanted it. Oh man back then (before fnf came out) owning one of these things was exceptionally cool. Hardly anyone knew what it was, had supercar looks, and it wasn't a sausage magnet like it is today. Sadly two months after ownership, my car caught fire and was totaled . I got paid good money for it and though I was bummed it didn't break the bank. Well at least I though I could move on to something else. Test drove several other cars, M3, camaro, twin turbo supra and none compared. Sadly I was indeed hooked as I ended up purchasing another FD 4 months after the fire. To this date I haven't driven anything that surpasses the overall sports car feel and thus the enjoyment of the FD. To put it mildly: This is an awesome car and I feel privileged to actually own one.

I'd say buy more parts, change the look, and never sell it. Ask people that want one what they think about FD's and wanting to own one and they should be more the excited to say that they buy if off you if they could afford it. SOOOOO take her out for another spin and watch people's heads turn and realize that when steering that you love your car all over again

My FD has been getting a little quirky lately. Nothing really wrong, it just didn't want to start. I guess it's getting too cold for the ol girl. hah

Yesterday I went outside and toyed with it for a little while and fired it up for the 1st time in about a week.

I took it for a spin to *** Hill and when I came out there were three guys standing around it. I walked up and they started a 3 man bidding war on my car! They made it to 15k in about 20 seconds, but I didn't really take them seriously, plus I don't want to sell my car.

Pretty cool though. I don't think that happens (or will ever happen) with S2000s or 350Zs.
