FD In Consumer Reports

I don't come here much (at all), but I ran across this article from Consumer Reports that I thought was interesting. It was originally a PDF which I still have if you want the whole article.

in the first pic the FD just stands out like a sore thumb. Easily looks like a 2000+ car while ALL the others look like dated 90s cars.

One of the most common comment i get on the FD also is how shocked ppl get when they find its a 93. Even funnier when it was designed a fews years before that :-)

Best part is the corvette is predicted to have the worst reliability.

oh and don't forget during 1992, there's not that much activity when it comes to modified import car in the US yet.

wow a 6 sec. 0-60 and 14.5 1/4 mile, didn't know my grandmother was a test driver for them. also, i dont see how the vette was faster since the FD has a better power to weight. any guesses?

Cool article, I too would like a copy of it for my files.

Interesting thing about CONSUMER REPORTS is that even years later, when talking about reliability of the FD, they don't really hammer it. If memory serves it was STILL rated 'average'.

Man....did anyone else get goosebumps reading that article? I mean, I would have KILLED for an FD in '93. My dealer friend (I've bought several Mazdas from him) called me up and said, "I have a yellow, well they call it Competition Yellow Mica, RX-7 with the Sports package here....do you want it?"
And my (ex) wife who was pregnant with my son at the time just shook her head no.
When I finally did go to the dealer, months later to see one up close and in person, I was just shocked at how ******* COOL the cars were. Pictures were kick-*** but to see it, touch it, sit in it....that was awesome.

I would guess the same. I've seen everything from these times (which seem high) to a 5.2
zero to 60 with a 13.1 quarter mile. Reality is somewhere in between. Also, depending on the ambient air temp when they tested, the FD might have sucked. I know when it is warm to hot outside, my car feels like it has lost about 100 hp and/or is dragging an anchor behind it.

wow pretty crazy, i had a similar situation. Got pulled over and was asked for license, reg, and insurance. I did and he immediately changes tone and demands i provide the information for the car im driving. "This says its for a 93 Mazda!" I laugh inside my head for a second and then tell him that the car was infact a 93 mazda. The officer seemed puzzled, took a step back to get a full glimpse of the car, gave a lil grunt and said "nice car". Not sure if it was him feeling stupid or the fact that he had to stop eating because my car looked like I was speeding...but he ended up giving me a ticket- 42 in a 35. Wow..
