FD buying questions

I am looking at buying a black r1 , and when I talked to the guy selling it, he said it had in intermittent check engine light. He got it check out at a Mazda dealer, who said it was the intake temperature sensor, and that it couldn't be replaced by itself, but the whole manifold would have to be replaced. I guess my first question is weather or not its true that you cant replace the sensor by it self, and also what is the result of that not reading correct (how big a problem is this). If anyone wants to give some advice on what I should be looking to pay (ballpark) for a black r1 with 86K on the clock, new engine and paint, plus most of the reliability mods done, that would be helpful as well.

Thanks,
Dale

It is a problem. But you can just replace the sensor. You have to REMOVE the manifold to replace the sensor, not replace the manifold.

Who rebuilt the motor/installed it?

A bad IAT will cause the car to run rich, especially cold. Not a huge deal as long as it isn't left that way too long. Power will be down, plugs will foul and oil will smell like fuel pretty quickly.
