Failed polarizing film.

I was starting to disassemble my 99 style gauge cluster and noticed the odometer display is really messed up. The odometer does work, but it is hard to see. I've recently watched a few YouTube's on how to fix old Gameboys and this is a fairly common issue.

So, I started at the edge and the polarizing film was the issue and peeled off, and a little Goo Gone cleared off the remaining adhesive.

The question is what's the correct type of polarizing film to replace it with?

Any possibility of transplanting the film from your old cluster on? I particularly haven't had experience with that, but I imagine if it was do-able, it would be somewhat like a screen protector for a phone, be extremely careful with the cleaning and make sure no contaminates work their way in. Then again, this does seem like a fairly common situation to run into with digital displays, so the material you seek is likely out there, but it brings it back to your original question, what type and where can it be sourced.

 

The OP's question peaked my curiosity, so I googled "polarizing film for LCD display" and lots of relevant hits for potential sources for the stuff came. Most of these are geared towards laptop screen repairs, but you can probably find something that will work after being cut to the proper size. Also, the same google search term resulted is a bunch of "how-to" videos geared towards laptop repairs.

 

No, it pretty much gets destroyed upon removal.

It's supposed to be a linear polarizer. No idea if it will work, but for $4.84 shipped from a trusted site in the US, I'll take a chance.

If anyone has a better idea or more knowledge about these types of film, hopefully they will post up here.

I have a spare JDM cluster that has the failed "alligator skin" polarizing film. Stuff is a CHORE to get off.

Long term I may need to do it on my cluster, it's showing signs that it's going to go.

Did anyone ever find a solution for this? A good replacement film? Mine is cracked across the middle.

 

I ended up having Michael Gagne fully rebuild my cluster and he replaced it at the same time.

Yep, same here. I know he's got a trick to it, removing the old film is tricky to do without damaging the odometer screen.

Haven’t posted in a while but this topic was my latest endeavor.

A few posts above mentioned replacing the polarizing film. I am here to report that it works.

My ODO worked, but looked exactly like post 1.

 

@fc3s-ty What polarizing film did you use? Going to give this a go on mine

 

linear polarized film, just have to trim to fit the sight window and frame. Potentially have to do both sides of the lcd which can be a pain.

Clean clean clean and clean your screen before putting that film on. Done a few custom lcd displays and you need to be in a dust free environment and use lint free cloth. Glad to see you guys doing stuff like this and keeping these cars on the road.

 

How did you do the film on the back side of that LCD? I'm frustrated because I got the front polarizing film off fine (used 70% isopropyl alcohol, my thumbnail and a lot of patience and elbow grease to get all of the glue off,) but ended up with some black spots after some flux remover (that I used after I recapped the board) got behind the glass of the LCD. It looks like the black spots are from film on the back of the LCD, but it is not obvious how to get to it.
