Extremely Rich (bad idle at first)

Well, upon startup, my car has always smoked white/grey and run very rich for the first few minutes, the smoke usually clears up after about 4 minutes of idle or if I drive it for about 50 seconds the smoke clears

Currently, when i start the car it starts up instantly, a little bluish oily smoke comes from the exhaust and some black liquid sprays out onto the concrete behind the exhaust pipe...

-the car will idle normally around 1200rpms then after about 30-40 seconds the engine shifts into "shake mode"

- car will shake lightly as if backfiring...and the idle will oscillate yet the car will still pull 17-18hg's....if its cold outside tons of white smoke will come from the exhaust (the smoke smellls strongly strongly strongly of gas and burns your eyes not even a drop of antifreeze scent)

- after 3-4 mins of warming up when the temps hit 100F, shaking stops and the smoking clears up completely...

THIS ONLY HAPPENS AT A COLD START....if the car is warm nothing unusual at all (starts up fast every time and coolant level never drops).....could i have a bad oil seal or stuck injector? Cold weather bring even RICHER startups

just thought, maybe the o2 sensor is bad?

Sounds like what you suspect, a leaky injector.

Confirm it this way. Hook up a fuel pressure guage to the rail, Key on the ignition until the fuel pump stops running. No need to start the engine really. Turn the key off.

Watch the guage. If the fuel pressure reading begins to drop or bleed off, you have an injector that is not clean. Or at the very worst, a damaged pintle in the injector in which case, will require a new injector. It should hold rail pressure for at least 15 minutes.

Before you tear into it, run a can of injector cleaner in the tank with your fuel.

I use Chevron injector cleaner with Techron. Follow the instructions on the bottle. More isn't necssarily better. There are many products but this one works for me.

Try to use a full tank of fresh fuel with the injector cleaner. Try to use it up in a few days. Don't leave it in the tank for an extended period of time. The stuff is pretty agressive.

This procedure is well proven. But if you still have problems, remove the injectors and send them to a reliable fuel service vendor such as Marren; www.injector.com Gasoline Alley Fuel injection; www.lindertech.com or RC Engineering; www.rcengineering.com . There are others but these are proven.

Good Luck

will do!...thanks alot guys...

but my other suspect was that the o2 sensor is bad.. i know that cars run rich on startup because the o2 sensor does not work until it hits a certain temperature...maybe my o2 sensor is not engaging properly and it monitoring a lean mixture causing the car to dump fuel at idle?

its the injector gromets the injectors fit in
mine was the same way till it blew took everything out and found one just wasted.
white smoke when cold backfire like a shotgun when hot and crank
but i would do the cheap stuff first before removing anything

I have been having pretty much the same problem ever since I bought my FD last April. In my hunt for the solution to the problem I have done the following:
Replaced the coolant temp sensor
Replaced the O2 sensor
Disabled the wax rod assy
Replaced the AWS solenoid
Blocked off the EGR
Had the injectors cleaned by WitchHunter
Replaced the injector grommets
Cleaned the ISC solenoid

All with the same result....no change. I'm starting to believe that it's the ISC solenoid on mine. Could potentially be your problem too. Unfortunately, I don't have any aftermarket gauges so I can't correlate temps with the occurence. ON mine it seems that just as the needle gets to the middle of C on the temp gauge, a switch is thrown and then all is fine. Does yours do the same thing too? One thing you cna do is get somebody with a Power FC and Datalogit and have them look at what solenoids are doing what when THEIR car is started froma cold start. You can then use that to find out what solenoids are active during your problem and narrow down your search. Best of luck man.....I feel your pain.

well...i figure ill get the injectors cleaned or maybe throw in some new larger injectors and check the fuel pressure, if i still have the problem why should i worry about it..at least its rich and not lean..the car has been doing this since i bought it all is great after a certain temp but until then ill have to push it out of the garage before i start it
