Expert advise needed

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to FD's and I just purchased mine in October. I recently bought a larger SMIC and was told that I had to run open filter intakes to fit. I bought Apexi intakes, but they're still too big. What would be my other options? I was thinking just straight K&N filters on the intake pipes, but I'm afraid of the other lines. The one from the air pump and the other going to the elbow, also the BOV. What would I have to do for those? Any input would be appreciated. I want to get all this figured out and tuned before the next GA GTG. I'm also installing a full exhaust and a few gauges to monitor everything. Don't worry I already have the PFC installed ;-)

Depends on the size of the SMIC and your budget. We have several customers running the HKS racing suction reload kit, with medium sized SMICs, it is a great intake, but is a little pricey HKS Intake (93+ RX-7)

The Apexi intake has one filter that points in the wrong direction for a larger SMIC

Here is a customer with a large SMIC, with just 2 K & N filter

If you are planning on a full exhaust, be aware that depending on what you choose there is the possibility of boost creep, which would require the wastegate to be ported.

Thanks for the suggestions! The HKS is a little pricey for me right now.

If I ran just the K&N filters what would I do with all the other hoses?

OK, let's go through the other hoses one by one:

- Hose to airpump: needs a filter of some kind so the air pump gets filtered air. K&N sells small clamp-on filters that do the job. You will need to order it most likely, this won't be at Pep Boys.
- Hoses to the 2 blow off valves: you can open air vent these.
- Hose from back of intake manifold (air pump return): you need an anti-moo device. Search on this, I have a writeup way back in the day about anti-moo. Basically it's a chair cap from Home Depot with holes drilled in it.

Done and done.

Also, Greddy has a nice hardpipe intake that I've seen go used for less than $200 with all the nipples to hook up the various hoses. Not sure what it runs new or if it is still available new.

I've used a small lawn mower muffler for an anti-moo device lol.

The Greddy Airnx intake for the FD was discontinued years ago.

If you are installing a full exhaust, then the smog pump can be removed. Install an idler. Pulleys & Belts (93+ RX-7)

Then remove the ACV tube with our block off plate, or better yet do a simplified sequential with all the plates. FD3s RX-7 Block Off Plates

As Dale said open air for the CRV and BOV

I've read that I have to keep my air pump if I want to even have a chance to pass emissions. Is that true?

If you are installing a full exhaust system you will have nothing to connect the air pump to. Since you have to pass emissions you need to be very careful modifying your car.

We have customers that use a high flow cat to pass emissions, then swap it out for their resonated mid-pipe after the test. The smog pump is not required to pass emissions, some states may require it to pass a visual test. Very precise tuning is a must.

Bad news after bad news... I'm going to run a bonez DP, Pettit high flow MP w/line to air pump, and HKS hi power catback. If tuned right do you think I can pass emissions?

You're gonna need at least one cat instead of that mid-pipe. The cat is not only good for the smog guy, but also the bottleneck will help to take care of boost-creep. A Bonez works great for me.

Also to the OP: A lot of people also swap out the battery to make more room for an oversized SMIC like the M2. Search "turbojeff" for a nice quality tray to fit a smaller (51R sized) battery.

The midpipe has a cat on it. Are you saying to add another somewhere? The intercooler I have actually sits further to the passengers said so even if I got a smaller battery it wouldn't help with my intakes fitting.

It's this intercooler: ??????????

with a one piece duct.

Cool. As long as there's a bottleneck of some sort.
The link worked well enough for us to know you picked out a nice SMIC.

OK, now that I've fixed my intake issue I'm now running into a fitment issue with my SMIC. I believe it's the duct. It's making my IC sit too far back, but what do you guys think? It doesn't seem like my RE-amemiya SMIC pipes are going to work.

On the last picture it seems without the duct it sits fine and will allow me to run my pipes. I pushed the duct in as far as possible too.

Thanks for any help or advice.

You do not have the duct installed far enough, reach through the front nose and pull it over the radiator. Compare your pictures to the ones on the RE site, you do not have it installed fully

I've tried pushing it in from the top, I'll try it the way you suggested and pull from the bottom. Thanks.

It is probably hung up on the radiator or A/C condenser

I think the koyo rad is too thick and its not allowing it to go any further. Do you think I can cut it to shorten it a little?

That is up to you, you are the one doing the install. Personally I would lower the radiator if it was in my way

Lower the radiator. Don't cut up a perfectly good SMIC ducting,

Chances are you have the Koyo installed incorrectly on the top mounts. All three of the cars I posted above run the Koyo, and there are no fitment issues with the SMICs.

You may have to remove the rubber isolators at the top of the radiator mounts, and mount the radiator directly to the body. I had to do this with my fluidyne radiator.
