exhaust noise video clips?

Hi guys,

Thanks to Insomniac, I finally got my Borla muffler welded into the midpipe (actually the guy fabricated piping and flanges and welded it onto the borla muffler--i still have my coated midpipe in case i ever want to go straight through) and the car sounds quiet! It actually sounds good!! I am impressed and pleased. I didn't get a chance to go WOT or get into boost because of afternoon commute traffic...but my butt dyno thinks the car's a tad bit slower to build boost.

in any case, i have three videos (avi) that are about 3.7 mb each taken from a digital camera. The 1st video was taken with the single turbo, open dumptube, midpipe, downpipe, and greddy power extreme exhaust. The 2nd video was taken yesterday with the same setup except it included a racing beat dual tipped exhaust instead of the power extreme. And the 3rd video was taken today with the racing beat exhaust, borla muffler in the midpipe, and the dumptube welded back into the exhaust system. I actually have a 4th video with me revving the car to 4.5k rpms just to capture the exhaust note. does anybody know of a free online place that will allow me to upload the videos so they can be seen?

thanks for any help,

anthony

You're welcome, I really wanted to see how your car tuned out, but had to run. I think I might do the same and get a borla put on also and live with the smelly exhaust. My car is way too slow with a cat on now.

thanks cjarrett

thanks to cjarrett, i have uploaded some video clips of the different exhaust setups. please right click and save-as these files. cjarrett is hosting them for me for free for a couple weeks so they will be gone soon. i hope this helps people when determining what kind of exhaust setups they want to go with.

i owe you one cjarrett.

the old setup was a downpipe, midpipe, and greddy power extreme with open dumptube off a t04s single turbo.

old setup

the next clip is the same setup as above but instead of the greddy power extreme exhaust, it has the racing beat exhaust.

same as above but with racing beat muffler

the next clips are the current configuration--racing beat muffler, borla xr-1 welded into the the center pipe, and dumptube routed to the center pipe.

new setup

new setup again

new setup revving to 4.5k rpm

thanks again to cjarrett and insomniac for their help!

Glad I could help!

Wow, quite a difference. Thats got to be the nicest sounding FD i've ever heard. Alot more mellow and deep, especially at idle.

The Borla muffler is very nice--I am really impressed by both the Borla and the Racing Beat mufflers. The Borla muffler has three tubes inside the muffler that fit inside a 3" diameter pipe. You can see through the muffler (looking through one end to the other) with no problem. It made a big difference in making the exhaust note quiet and mellow.

Thank you again Cjarrett for hosting the clips!

Thats great silverOckt....thanks big time for the sound clips!!! And Cjarrett for the hosting.

I did a "search" on exhaust sound clips till 4am last night.
Do you think I could find any still being hosted??

All you people that are know it alls and tell us to do searches all the time can do you know what!!

Peeps are asking for these sound clips all the time but know one seems to have any.
If the Mods made this an official Sticky off exhaust tones then maybe we would stop asking for them.

So is there any other clips floating around that peeps may have(seeing how I could not find that many)?
-Greddy Sp
-Apex i GT Spec
-M2
-Tanabe Racing Medalion
-JIC Bullet
-Blitz Nur Spec
-Apex i N1
etc...etc

Anthony.........how come you did not just try the Borla with the GReddy to start? Would that not have made things quieter for you also? Then you could of saved on the cost of the Racing Beat.

Again, thanx guys...it helps a lot!

Cheers
Shawn

Shawn, glad you liked the clips. i'm afraid we can't make this a 'sticky' thread even tho that is an awesome idea, because cjarrett is only hosting the clips for a few weeks...so if somebody else would like to host these clips on a more permanent basis for other 3rd gen owners, that would indeed be great.

I also did lots of searches for different exhaust setup noise clips and/or video clips but did not find many. I would find lots of rx7 videos with the cars revving or racing, but I have no idea what kind of exhaust setup they are running.

I liked the greddy exhaust alot but it caught the attention of a CHP officer last month and he pretty much dicked me and wasted my time. I went with a racing beat muffler to "subdue" the looks a bit.

But the greddy exhaust is going to another rx7 owner and I know he'll enjoy it.

Download the clips while you can guys! I think I'm going to start my car up and just sit in the garage, smell the fumes and listen to the exhaust noise....

I'd host them for longer, but my web host (friend) is doing it for free, and with that amount of traffic, I don't think it would be courteous to him.Sorry

Your car is beautiful

Why'd you get the borla?... sick of the noise?
Do you have anything ported?

Thanks

silver0ckt, your car sounds great!!! Can you PLEASE tell us exactly WHICH Borla XR-1 you got? I've looked at them and there are so many choices and sizes. From what I remember, one style was more for racing and the other was more for street. And then once you made that decision, there were all kinds of sizes and shapes. And thanks for the videos .

Damn!!!! I fear your car That is definitely a VERY extensive fuel system. You have custom main and secondary fuel rails and then a 3rd rail? And that video of you peeling out is pretty hard.

And yeah, I really believe you are in Japan now Are you going to the Tokyo Auto Salon? I wanted to go but my Japanese friend (and translator ) could not get his passport in time. But next year I will definitely go. Maybe we can meet you there. Click on the link under my picture and you can check out my pics too

Take care,
Tom

Okay here we go...probably won't get as good of dl speeds as the other guy, so use his until he takes em down

midpipe, Greddy Power Extreme
midpipe, RB dual tip
Borla XR-1, RB dual tip #1
Borla XR-1, RB dual tip #2
Borla XR-1, RB dual tip, rev to 4500 rpms

Oh, btw...I am SOOOOOO glad you did this!! I was thinking about changing to RB dual tip with a Borla XR1!! You just sold me on it!! Sounds EXCELLENT!

Here's my annoying *** setup...ATR catback with dp/mp. Tone is actually okay above 4000 rpm, sounds like a rocket ship taking off. But it is just toooo damn loud!

ATR catback, ATR midpipe

cjarrett, please thank your friend for hosting the clips for us! and we thank you too!

mavrick, the motor is stock. i got the borla because i wanted to quiet the car down a bit to attract less attention from the bastard CHP guys. I want to give them the least reason possible to pull me over (reduce the exhaust noise, switch to stock looking twin-tip exhaust, etc). plus, i feel bad for waking up the neighborhood at 6am when i start the car.

Tom, I got the Sportsman XR-1 muffler 3" center inlet/outlet part number 40944. Summit Racing has them cheaper than Borla directly...go here Glad you liked the vids (thanks to cjarrett again!)

Geoff, thanks for the compliments! I've used half a tank of gas the past couple days just driving with the radio turned off and listening to the car. I actually enjoy the exhaust note now! I haven't really gone WOT to redline and let off or shift to see if it would backfire or spit flames. But I would imagine that if you are spitting flames now, you should still be able to spit flames with the Borla because you can physically see straight through from one end to the other. You can drop objects through the muffler and they will fall out from the other end. I was skeptical at first and didn't think it would quiet the exhaust much since it was still straight-through, but it definitely makes a world of difference.

Sokudo, sweet car man!! bridgeport sounds mean...i like...heh.

GotBoostd7, thanks man for offering to host the vids! hey maybe now we can make this thread a 'sticky'? it'll be my first 'sticky' thread. lol! I promise that if you change to the RB dual tip and a Borla setup, you won't be disappointed. I've spent the past couple days driving aimlessly with the radio off and the window down just to listen the car wind up.

YayeR, the old setup isn't too bad so long as you aren't living in the republik of kalifornia. The local police didn't give me a second look whenever I passed them by. But the CHP have nothing better to do than to make bullshit reasons and lies to pull you over and then they go on a fishing trip to see what else they can write you up on.

I'm surprised nobody else has taken video or sound clips of their car's exhaust setups. With all the different brand exhaust systems and combinations of cats, midpipes, silencers, we should have a huge variety of clips to listen to and choose from.

Anyways, off to enjoy the wknd by driving some more.

So this is the bad boy we're talking about here?

Anybody have any experience with the Dynomax or Magnaflow round mufflers? I know they both make a 6" diameter...is that too big? They are both about $120 cheaper than the Borla. Just a thought for those with a little less padding in their wallets.

doh...guess what? i stumbled upon my old box that the borla muffler came shipped in...the part number is 40575 which is 60 dollars more than p/n 40944 but 40944 should work too...they are identical dimensionally except that the 40944 is a 1/4" taller in height.

How much do those dynomax or magnaflow mufflers go for? they are $120 cheaper than borla 40944? The borla 40944 is on sale for $146....

if the dynomax or magnaflow mufflers are only $30, then I say someone try it and post some sound clips! At $30 a piece, they wouldn't be a bad choice to try out!

6" diameter mufflers are too big I think. The one I have is an oval shaped muffler and is only 4.25" high. There's not much room underneath the car and the "tunnel" for the exhaust system is wider than it is taller. I'm sure you can fit a 6" muffler in there, but it will most likely stick out from underneath the car and be prone to hitting the speedbumps and such.
