exhaust leak sound, only when 2nd turbo kicks in....EGR?

so, after installing my efini "y" pipe kit and disabling my egr (not removed, just disabled) i've noticed something different.

now, when the 2nd turbo kicks in, it sounds like **** - really farty like a kazoo. almost like an exhaust leak or something. i'm pretty sure its not a boost leak because i have a perfect 10-8-10 pattern.

could this be my egr? perhaps it needs to be removed and not just disabled?

when i had the "y" pipe off i disabled it just like this:
from http://robrobinette.com/egr.htm

would this maybe be the reason why i'm hearing this weird sound? like i said, i'm fairly sure its not a boost leak because i have a perfect boost pattern. the #1 turbo spools up so clean - it sounds perfect. as soon as the 2nd turbo kicks in the whole thing sounds really farty. i don't see why it would sound like this only when the 2nd turbo kicks in.

help?

Does the car run any differently, or is it just the noise you don't like?

I'm not convinced that there is any real benefit to disabling it. I know this is obvious, but I would suggest reinstalling the hose.

ah the car doesn't really run any differently...it just sounds different.

from idle to 4500 rpm's it sounds so smooth and clean...nothing but the faint whistle of the turbo suction. then the 2nd turbo kicks in (boost drops from 10lbs to 8lbs for a second, and regains to 10lbs) - this is when it sounds bad...sounds very farty. i can't figure it out! i'm going to try re-enabling the EGR tomorrow to see if that fixes it. it literally sounds like an exhaust leak, it's very noticeable. it just doesnt make sense. the car is running great, idles fine, boosts fine, etc... it just sounds like **** when the 2nd turbo kicks in. hmmm

maybe i can make a video and you guys can see what im talking about. so strange..

The only other thing I can think of is that the secondary turbo piping isn't sealed completely. Maybe double check the rear turbo to y-pipe bolts. A leak there might sound "farty".

i think you might be right. perhaps the o-ring on the Y pipe is not sealing properly. i'm going to tear it down tomorrow to take a look.

Check to make sure that the cover on the turbo pre-control valve is tight. If it gets loose it will make weird exhaust leak noises. When it gets real loose (e.g., bolts falling out) you will have difficulty making full secondary boost. Two of these bolts also hold the turbos to the exhaust manifold. You can check this easily from under the car, but will need to take off the turbo's heat shield to see it.

well, it's been a long day.

removed all the piping. found some oil in the brand new Y pipe...on the rear turbo side.

removed the EGR and made a block-off plate...bolted that up, put it all back together and went for a test drive...

"hey why is my BOV sound like its drowning?"

get home, pop open the hood, and find a pool of oil that was spat out by the BOV.

so, i guess my turbos finally kicked the bucked. god damnit.

maybe its time to go single...haha

the good news is that the motor is running file. idles nice, rev's clean.

It is not unusual to find a small amount of oil in the y-pipe. I suggest putting everything back to stock (except new y-pipe).

no, the turbo is definitely dead. besides sounding like **** it spits A LOT of oil. i don't mean a few drops in the intake... the BOV had so much oil go through, probably a few tablespoons in just 1/2 mile of driving.

i'm going to turn down the boost and drive around a little to see if its any better, but i'm pretty sure they need a rebuild...damn, only 30k miles on them too :|
