ok im sure you have all heard about the ATF treatment and the water treatment... well, I was pressed for time so I did the water treatment instead (you know, put the vacuum line in the bottle and let it suck up the water) well, some people use 2 liters, some 1, whatever, I used only 240 mL which is nothing. well the only factory part I have on my exhaust is the factory cat. anyway, I let the car suck up this water knowing it is supposed to get hot so I dont keep it in the water for more than like 30 secs at a time. anyway, the water is out, so I go to see if everything in the engine bay is ok, which it is thankgod, but then I see some smoke coming up from the tailpipes, I go to look and the ******* back of my car is on fire wtf!!!! the **** wasnt even glowing on the outside (borla exhaust)!!! WTF, now the back of my car is FUBAR, although the engine does seem to run a bit smoother and is more responsive feeling.




hopefully those pics work, if not ill post links, but **** what a mess. anybody got any ideas how to fix this ****? do I have to buy an entire new rear end? argh!

I'm not a body expert but that looks like pretty extensive damage. My guess is that it will cost as much to fix it as it will to buy a new rear end. May be a good excuse to get that body kit you always wanted

That rear end is toast. You might as well get a new rear end. I'm not sure if you can clean that burnt paint off the top of your exhuast either.

Hi!

I am restoring a '93 M. Blue touring that was salvaged because of a bumper fire. The damage was more extensive than yours, I am sure. The fire was caused by a rotten stock muffler that eventually caught the bumper on fire and the fire progressed up the antenna cave and trashed the inside quarter panel and burned the wiring.

I will send you an e-mail picture of my problem and what I have done to fix it. Call me if you like.

You did this why??
Probably superheated water vapor melted the plastic. Looks like you will need at least a new bumber cover.

What in the holy hell is the water treatment? Why did you use it? I've owned my R1 for three years and have never heard of this...

YES...someone enlighten me and tell me what the hell the ATF and water treatment is.

I was looking around and it seems people add automatic transmission fluid to burn off the carbon build-up in the engine (only found some mails on 2nd gen). Kind of a last ditch effort to improve compression in a failing motor. Couldn't find anything on the water though. Your exhaust temp will go through the roof if you add water.

iver been readin abt fd's for over 5 years now and have never heard of "the water treatment" atf breaks up carbon quickly, where as water will eventually disolve anything, i mean dimaonds, titanium, yea it might take a million years but water will disolve it.....but putting water into the comustion chamber cant do ****? can it. i mean it will either vaporise, or turn ito steam wich steam blasting the engine may help- but for the 30 sec it will be in the engine it wont do anything....but where the fire came from i have no clue, all i could think is the water gave the ecu a very cold air temp readin so the engin dumped more fuel in, and the water cooled down the cat enough to allow the fuel vapors to combust in the muffler section, but even the the stem would of cooled the muffler section down....very wierd

I particularly liked the comments about H2 and O2 production. That's what they use for fuel on the space shuttle!! Sorry, to say that it's just very warm steam. I don't know how long he did it but his turbo bearings might be toast by now...

heh, well thanks for all the positive comments, but on the bright side, nothing was damaged but the bumper itself. also, the engine runs much smoother as a result of getting some of the carbon out of there. I was about to go to bed when I read the post about the turbo bearings so I had to go check out how she ran. started right up as usual with about a -13, -14 vacuum at idle which seems normal. I let her warm up and did some WOT runs to check the boost pattern which is also normal. there wasnt any smoke before this blunder and there isnt any now either which is good
also, just as my luck would have it, I got "caught" by a county brownie doing my boost tests , but anyway I talked my way out of it somehow.
anyway, the steam thing makes sense about making it hot, but only the main cat was glowing slightly, which is no where near the rear bumper, I guess it was just the shear heat of the exhaust gases. BTW, the engine bay was still cool through all of this, go figure.

almost forgot... anyone know where I can get a new bumper without selling one of my kidneys? doesnt have to be stock. thanks
