Exhaust clanking / what's this bar under the car

There's the support bar of some sort under the car that my exhaust is clanking against.

1. What's the bar do? I'm guessing it's a body brace of sorts?
2. Is it wise to put something between the bar and the exhaust pipe? Maybe a piece of high temp silicone? Or something?
3. If that's not a good idea, what would you guys do to fix this?

Yes, it's a crossmember.
It would be better to find out why the exhaust and brace are making contact. Have you checked the hangers?

No offense if they're your welds... but judging from just that one in the picture the exhaust system is rigged and probably can't be aligned properly to avoid the xmember.

The proper fix, since you have a 3" exhaust now is to make up a new crossbrace that will allow the pipe to clear. I can make you up one for $150 shipped or you do it for the price of a 3/16" bar and fab work.

Just for clarification, is it some of the exhaust systems that won't clear? Because my 3 inch system clears fine.

With the proper bends a 3" aftermarket exhaust will barely clear the rear crossbrace, but most that I have seen won't. The hangers allow the "clanging"

what I am talking about it the front part of my differential brace as you see here in the pics.

For some reason the pics will not upload. Send me an e-mail and I'll send them to you. Maybe you can upload them. E-mail, not a PM.

Like someone else said check your hangars. There made of rubber and over the years they can start to sag and put a lot of play in the exhaust system.
