I just smiled and said "ya, and...?" He wasn't happy.
I've been behind a few uncatted 7s and recently got a wiff of WOT vette merging onto the highway. I think the vette was stock(might have had no cat though) but it smelled like ***. Not much different than an uncatted rotary really.
When I put a temp cat on my car to pass emmisions it made my car smell even worse than without the cat. I've read of a few people complaining about the same thing after installing a cat, I've always thought they were nuts until it happened to me.
Apparently riding a motorcycle behind a rich uncatted rotary can be dangerous though.

Those gas fume can do some serious injury to the lung and any organ in your body.
Rotary fume kills...... Don't let rotorhead smell and drive. Go LS1. Just kidding....

My car is relatively quiet and clean. At the autox the other week, the guys were commenting on how I was the 'silent but deadly' car in the group - everyone else had a trumpet of noise and smoke.
Of course, I still have all emissions working, so that might have absolutely everything to do with it. Being behind an FD with a gutted exhaust is nothing at all like a stock FD.

Since I have no A/C I have to roll with the windows down and every time I stop at a light I can smell it, especially since my car is running super rich. I got home the other night and my wife was all worried because i walked in the house crying and she thought something happened.

Interesting, mine is stock except for the DP, I am just surprised how much of a dark cloud forms when I go from low to high RPM by downshifting. If I just hold a gear and accelerate, it doesn't look so bad.
OK, then here is the second question...
For those of you with tunable computers. Even though the super rich WOT is there to protect the engine, have you tried to tune some of the dark clouds away?

Which brings me to another point: While most automobiles running straight pipes will have a lot of nasty fumes pouring out the rear, it should be remembered that the rotary isn't like most automobile engines. It has a irregular-shaped combustion chamber that doesn't lend itself to a complete burn of the intake charge very well (hence the two plugs), and the FD's engine runs even richer due to needing fuel dump to supress detonation. Thus, it usually pours out a hell of a lot more unburnt hydrocarbons and other noxious fumes than the average automobile.

The only thing I done to my care in that section is the downpipe. I smell a bit of fuel but I can stay in my garage at least for quite a time when the engine is runnig. . Then as evey other car you do not have to stay there so I guess mine is pretty normal in that sense.

I have experienced the "stop with the windows down and inhale" trouble.
Funny though, it does not smell like exhause at all, but like freon, or amonia, or maybe vinegar.

I'm too old for stinky cars. I don't like the smell personally, and I feel like an ******* driving around without a cat. However, it doesn't seem to take much to clean things up. One metallic cat and the exhaust is livable again.

I've ridden a motorcycle behind my FD (only engine mod is a downpipe), and didn't notice any smell. As others may know, you can smell things really well on a motorcycle, especially if you've got your helmet's vents open. The car is pretty stinky before it's warmed up, however.
