I've been working with several machinists over the past few weeks trying to work out some cost structures. The cost is going to be slightly higher than I originally was hoping for, but this higher cost is necessary to ensure proper precision on important features. Obviously this is required for the bar to function as designed.

Currently, I'm estimating a selling price of right around $400. This price would include the main bar, left and right side mounting brackets, all necessary hardware, and shipping anywhere in the 48 states. There will also be a few added-cost options available (including custom brackets for securing the hatch cover).

This pricing structure would require a minimum order of 20.


I need to know if we have enough interested people for this to happen? Please respond to this thread to voice your opinion.

I just got my hands on a FARO ARM... so whenever you have a prototype or the final version... let me know... id like to test it.

 

After producing the prototype, I will personally perform dimensional-analysis using laser scanning, and load-analysis using SATEC machines. All production parts will be dimensionally analyzed and test-fit by hand.

Why would you like to test it with a FaroArm? No offense, but there are not many engineers that like the idea of sending one of their designs to someone who has access to a device that is specifically used for reverse engineering...

Well... take into concideration that I am only 16. I have access to equipment like this, so im just experiencing diffrent things in this field, playing around with structural analysis and CAD and etc...... i have a facination with reverse engineering which should explain FaroArm testing... plus i just got hold of it.. so im eager to do different things.

Anyway... once again... good luck with everything... this looks like a great product.... lots of hardwork, effort, and engineering put into this. $400 is a very reasonable price for the things it has to offer. It really bothers me when i see many people with saftey equipment(roll bars/cages, harness bars, harnesses, etc.) that hasnt been installed correctly and such which makes the product practically useless, this will be different.

EDIT: Just out of curiousity.... what SATEC products will you be using?.. and is it possible for me to see the test? once again... im just exploring the field lol. If you dont want to disclose any of the information (for any reason).. that is pefectly understandable.

 

Saxy, I REALLY appreciate all the work on this, and understand there should be something in it for you. That said, it's definitely on the high side of what I anticipated spending on a harness bar. Still interested but personally, if final pricing goes much higher....??

 

We have several LX series SATEC's, one of which is capable of testing up to 135,000 lbf. I will setup a rig to test using one of these. But I highly doubt that I will publish any of the testing data. Unfortunately, it's just way too much work to do so.

I definitely understand your concern about the relatively higher price. If I could keep the selling price at my original goal of $300, then I wouldn't even bother with an interest count, I'd just go ahead an do a small production run. But believe me when I say that I'm trying to keep the price down as low as possible. Even selling 20 at $400 gives a profit margin so thin, it's basically negligible. But at the current cost of materials, and machining, any lower of a selling price and I risk losing money.

I already ordered the Autoexe set thru FDnewbie/Ramy, but would seriously consider ordering this as well. Will you be building the prototype (I assume that you're building one for yourself, irregardless of whether is a production run) before taking a firm 'showing of hands'? CAD illustrations are great and all, but really want to see the bar 'in the flesh'.

Really hope that a matching front bar is possible; that would really get me hooked.

You will be happy to note that a prototype is in the works right now. I will NOT accept any orders on any product that I create until I have a physical object in hand, and it has survived scrutinous analysis and testing.

You will be even happier to note that I am currently working on CAD models for a billet front bar as well.... along with several other "interesting" products.

An actual group buy thread requires a financial contribution to the RX-7Club. This is definitely not a problem, and I'm more than happy to contribute for the right to run a group buy.

However, I have absolutely NO interest going into production with these if I won't be able to sell them and at least break even. Right now, I'm just trying to see if there's even enough interest to actually run a production lot.


Thanks to all who have given interest and their support in the conclusion of this project. If this one goes well, then I have MANY other upcoming projects specifically devoted to RX-7s. Should be fun
