Engine Shutoff at 3300 RPM

Hey Guys,
Forgive me if I've missed something in my search here, but this seems to be a bit unique.
I recently had my '93 engine rebuilt, and even more recently replaced failing injectors. Since the injector replacement, (about two weeks ago) the car has run well.
I'm planning a road trip over the holidays, so I took a little shakedown run on Thursday. Put on about 300 miles... everything working great except for a slow idle when warmed up with the transmission in gear.
Friday I drove the car to and from work. No problems except the low idle speed.
Then this evening I get in the car and as I drive down the street, the engine shuts off every time I get above about 3300 RPMs. So I limp it back to my garage. When sitting in neutral, I can rev the engine above 3300, maybe as high as 5000 rpm, but I get backfires as it decelerates.
Above 3300RPM and under load, the engine is shutting down. Is the ECU getting bad info and cutting fuel or ignition? Is it protecting the engine from an unsafe condition?
Any thoughts? Any idea where I should look first? I'm pretty puzzled and clearly can't be takin' a trip with this going on.
Thanks,
Tom

Update: after getting some rest and digging deeper I determined that the car was operating in Limp Mode. I had no idea what that was until this happened.
Checked the trouble codes by jumpering the diagnostics plug. I got a "44" which is "Solenoid Valve, Turbo Control-open or short circuit. Cleared the codes, restarted the engine, everything is back to normal. Took a short drive, rechecked the codes, all clear.
Any ideas why it would have thrown that code? And which is the Turbo Control Solenoid? I'd like to at least check/clean the connector before trusting the car for drives of any distance.
Thanks!
Tom
