Engine number 3... down the drain?

Driving home...

My oil pressure gauge was going wack. The car runs super rich and it did not detonate.

Anyway check this.

The oil pressure is fine, until the car hits positive pressure, then the oil pressure drops to ****. At idle the engine shakes like all holy hell. I figure this is a blown seal.

My rear main seal was leaking.. and now it may have completely took a ****.

Perhaps the rear iron cracked, or the o-ring went out.

Also, when I press on the clutch it feels like something is rubbing against the flywheel.. or it may just be from the engine shaking so much.

Anyway.. number 3 is down. I had a steve kan tune and I didn't boost over 17psi. I just smelt burning oil and noticed my oil pressure. Oh well... *sigh*

It runs like total ***... guess it's coming apart tomorrow. We'll see.

bummer...

I'm hoping 3rd motor's a charm for me....no plans to run 17 psi, I'll stick with 14 or 15 at most

You run methanol correct? Obviously something is wrong, but it doesnt sound like the motor detonated....had you been making redline pulls? Based on your post, it sounds like this just kind of happened out of the blue.....

Yes pump and methanol.

When I am under boost.. the AFR's are always in the 11.0-9.9 range. So the car runs stupid rich for safety.. I was willing to sacrifice the power for the safety.

The engine did not detonate, but I am leaning to believe the rear o-ring on the iron crapped out or the rear iron cracked.

My rear main seal has been leaking and it might have just given out...

Easy way is to pull off the turbo and check for seal chunks..

I'm also going to do a compression test.

Sounds like it could be a spun bearing.

How many spun bearings have you ever seen? Im not claiming to be an expert, but in the many rx7s Ive owned and worked on, I have never even heard of anyone having a spun rotor bearing. With the large volume of cars you deal with I fugure you would have a better idea, but it just seems like something that never happens.

I am going to do a compression test and then check that rear seal. If the compression test is good (which i hope) then obviously its an oil related problem. If all fails... i'll rebuild the kai again.. and throw in the race ported motor =/

Ouch!! It sounds like a bad bearing to me also. This is the reason why I always recommended balacing the assembly on our engines. I have seen as much as 120grams off in an engine because of a bad flywheel/counter weight. Pull the oil pan out and see if there were any metal shavings in it.

Man....that sucks *****. Who built the engine? You got any warranty with it? You could always go the LS route! Not that I recommend one way or the other but it's an option. Definetly keep us updated on what you find out man.

That sucks. Did you use all new parts when you had this motor rebuilt or were they refurbished?

I have seen a couple. Most of the time it sounds like a knocking coming from the tranny and the motor will shake. If you catch it early it wont screw up your rotors or shaft, but if you dont then prepare for some new parts. Like Steve said, drain the oil and stick a magnet in there. Check for shavings.

I've seen a bunch of motors shot because of bearing failure. You're right, it sounds like you've got a rod knocking.

Well compression test looked ok. The front was good and the rear was a bit lower.. but the spikes were even on all 3 faces.

I am not smoking any oil...

And if it were a bearing.. the engine would be toast. That would just send the rotor right into the housing and seize up the motor. It runs... but it runs like ****.

Only way to figure this out is to take it apart.. ugh.
