engine bay cleanup question

my engine bay is pretty dirty and could use a good cleaning. what do i have to cover and keep from getting wet?

distributor, fuse box, battery, etc

OR if you use distilled water (or a really good filter on your hose) just disconnect the battery and spray away. Keep the hood open in the sun, and let it dry for a few hours before you drive it.

Pure water does not conduct electricity, and causes very very little rust.

distributor? Don't have to worry about that...

So far, I have just hosed down or wiped stuff off but I haven't really tried to clean the engine itself.
