Emissions/Rotary equivelant

So i went to get my FD inspected, Once for state inspection and once for emissions. Each time they asked me "How many cylinders" and my reply is obviously a hesitant "Zero" then they give me a smart *** remark, and we get into a 10 minute discussion about how i have no cylinders or pistons. in the end they finally come around and realize what im saying. But my only concern is in the emissions, they put 2 cylinders for the test. i dont know if that has anything to do with the applicable standards for the test, but if that made my car fail... what should i tell them next time i go for emissions. should i say 6 cylinders?

They are not going to fail you because you are short a few cylinders.

It is what comes out the tailpipe that matters and the pass levels for this do not vary by the number of cylinders or the lack thereof.

i didnt know if there were different standards for number or cylinders. I.E. larger standards for say a V8 comapred to a 4 banger. because i barely failed. i failed by .01 on hydrocarbons and by 2.49 on Carbon monoxide.

anyone with knowledge of emissions... could you tell me if a simple tune up could possibly fix this problem?

Yeah, make sure you are not running any premix, right before the test, drive around the block in 1st gear to get the cat nice and glowing hot. If you are close to passing, that usually does the trick

If you are that close to passing new spark plugs, an oil change, and perhaps new wires would not hurt. Make sure car is well warmed up before the test as the previous poster suggested.

emission

seems like to me your engine is running very rich.... I would actually do an inspection on it before just go changing plugs and so forth. Reasons that your engine can be running rich is : Rupture fuel regulator diaphram, plugged fuel return line, air filter has too much crap in it, anything that dealt with high fuel pressure or less air will cause your engine to run rich.

Another thing is, did you notice what's your reading on O2s? If theres O2 values, it can help verify and narrow down to what's going on in your engine. Do some researches, just dont go shot gunning everything and at end end, it could be something very simple maybe. GOod luck.

when your doing an inspection it says... "enter number of cylinders, enter "R" for rotary. the number of cylinders and the weight of the car does have an effect because heavier cars with more cylinders pollute more. as for your car running rich you should really get that checked.next time you go in for an inspection, warm up your car and leave it running while you wait... good luck man let me know how it goes next time

im going this coming tuesday, and my car was tuned by pettit to run a little richer than normal (Large Streetport). Could the Pettit Protek-R have any effect on the testing as well? i never thought about that but i filled up yesterday along with a 4 oz. bottle of protek-r. as for the running rich though, i asked pettit when i bought the car if it was supposed to run as rich as it is, and they said thats how it was tuned (for the previous owner, and by pettit)

here are the numbers they gave me

Hydrocarbons 1.01
Acceptable Standard 1.00

Carbon Monoxide 14.49
Acceptable Standard 12.00

Oxides of Nitrogen 1.53
acceptable Standard 2.50

let me know what im seeing.. if anyone could help explain to me what im seeing i would appreciate it.

ive heard a lot of people say that it is really hard to pass emissions with a street port.

hydrocarbons= incomplete combustion (bad pulgs wires, cheap gas etc)

oxides of nitrogen= combusiton chamber temperature (try to keep low by running rich

however running rich will raise your CO%. if your car was tuned to run rich you need to get it de-tuned to pass emissins then re-tune it

carbon monoxide= combustion chamber efficiency (how well your engine is properly running)
however running rich will raise your CO%. if your car was tuned to run rich you need to get it de-tuned to pass emissins then re-tune it. its going to be hard to pass with your streetport but it can be done... what you have to do is find someone who has done it before and ask them what they did. i wish i can help you but ive never delt with an fd with a port tryin to pass emissions. good luck man let me know how eveything goes

ProTek is premix. In other words, it's oil added to the fuel to help lubricate the engine seals and internals. It's commonly used in 2-stroke engines, which are becoming less and less popular because they are not emissions friendly.

well that right there might make me pass, because i filled up just before... thank you, i didnt know that it was considered a premix, i was just told it prolonged the life of the engine, and i didnt ask any questions
