Emissions Results Old vs New Engine and Cat

Emissions results on old engine w/ 44K miles and original Cat. In case you couldn't read the wrinkled paper:

HC 239
CO% 4.35
CO2% 12

Improved Emissions results on new Malloy Engine and Mazda Cat.
Again if you can't decipher the paper:

HC 16
CO% .06
CO2 10.8
O2 5.4

Even with a new engine and cat., I didn't know what to expect during emissions from a rotary. My mechanic actually likes my car now. He said that the new engine is "awesome". Also, I replaced the precat with a downpipe.

Who would have thought that these engines meet their emissions targets from the factory?

i know right....i keep registering my cars in states that don't require emissions because i know it will fail, it helps being in the military so i can get away with it

i'm just waiting until 2013 then i can register the car as a classic and don't have to deal with emissions anywhere!

Because my Rx7 suddenly failed last year, I was worried that emissions standards had tightened up to ridiculous levels in NJ.

Four grand. Seems to be the set price for new 13Bs from Malloy Mazda. I could've got alot more power and a rebuilt engine for alot less at a speed shop. But I wanted to break the ice and gain serious knowledge for future work.
Some people have fast-loud cars but can't diagnose a dead battery.

well your tests are skewed...

Put back your old cat and compare. Because at this point I'd say the reason you previously failed was due to your old cat and not the engine.

Skewed??? Good idea, but I sold the old cat. I replaced my engine for better performance and emissions. No regrets. The old engine was down to 95 psi. The acceleration difference between the old and new engine is huge. I guess that's why my mechanic likes the car.

performance was probably bad on the old engine due to the old plugged melted cat... but at least you have a nice fresh engine and cat to play with now! good piece of mind.

Carbon infestation is why you lose compression on a low mileage rotary. You could have done numerious things to bring the compression back up to where is should be. Seriously, you could have saved thousands of dollars. Your cat clogging up proves this. Also water steam cleaning really does keep the cat clean.

i just passed nj inspection a month ago, btw you have to pass the same requirements as a 4 cylinder engine for smog.

The cat wasn't clogged, overheating or falling apart. Just failed emissions over and over. Engine compression was dropping. I saw a procedure with gum out and kerosene to clean a carboned up engine. But I don't live on a farm. I wish I did though.
I could debate all day.

Below are my results from emissions testing today in CT.
It's a 1987 FC3S, rebuilt engine, v-mount 60 trim turbo Haltech setup. Used two cats welded together in place of mid-pipe, and a 12v tire inflator pump plumbed into the cat "air-pump" nozzle, running constantly (of course the cats/pump are temporary):

Limits/units are a little different for CT:
HC(PPM): 172 / 385
CO(%) 0.61 / 1.23
NOx(PPM): ZERO / 2692
Gas cap test: passed.

Super passed.

Good luck to all.
