EGR Valve + rats nest

Hi fans!

Yesterday, i started to replace all vacuum hoses at the rats nest. I do it myself now because i gave a "self declaimed" rx7 specialist the order to rebuild it - it ended in a total desaster, near all screws werent tight ( airbox, intake manifold... )
Today, i checked every hose and i found out, that on my rx7 fd buit in 1992 ( JDM version ), the EGR solenoid is missing. All pipes leading to and from the EGR solenoid arent there ( and when you look at the hard pipes, you can see that there was never any hose on it ).
Also, my bottom part of the intake manifold doesnt have an intake for the hose coming from the EGR.

So stupid question, what is the EGR good for?
Btw maybe someone knows how much does a solenoid cost ( because three are broken ).

thx and greetings from austria
Andi

UPDATE:
I just found out what EGR stands for. So im a lucky owner of an FD who hasnt an EGR stock :-)

The EGR takes exhaust gas and puts it back into the intake. It is supposed to help with emissions and fuel economy. It mainly works when the car is up to speed say on a highway. It is not needed and can be removed.

Hi all

Yesterday, i finished the work with the vacuum hoses, after a long time.
But i still have a question: Rob Robinette wrote on his site that you need small and big vacuum hoses, but i cant remember where a big vacuum hose is needed. Like the link here ( http://robrobinette.com/images/hoses.gif ), is someone here who can tell if there are some hoses which had to changed to big hoses?? Yes, i finished the work but it would be interesting if i did something wrong.

And 2nd question, there is the boost sensor in the engine room. If you follow the hose, you will find a "one-way-valve" - so im correct when i say the air is allowed to go only in one direction?? My valve seems to be broken, you can suck and blow the air in both directions.

regards
Andi

I believe that is a filter attached near the boost sensor, to prevent oil particles from damaging the sensor.

The filter has an arrow leading in one direction, if im right it leads to the engine, away from the boost sensor.

It is a filter - if you put a check valve in there, the engine will either a)run like ****, or b) blow up in a spectacular fashion when you get on it.

Not sure why they put the arrow on there, but they do.

EGR was only on '93-94 US market cars to meet some obscure emissions regulation. I think Mazda even knew the system was useless - the gasket for the EGR valve has literally a PINHOLE passage for the exhaust gas that gets clogged up with carbon in no time. The system is absolutely useless.

Funny thing is the '86-91 RX-7's had EGR at first, then Mazda dropped it.

I'm not sure if you are just replacing the lines in the rats nest or ALL of the vac lines in your engine compartment. There are restrictors/pills in two of the lines feeding the turbo (assuming you are running stock twins)
