Dumb question?
I heard someone talking recently about removing their thermostat on a 3rd gen and running without one.
Is this safe? Are there ANY advantages in doing this?

I know in a normal car you don't usually want to do this, because the engine will never get up to normal operating temperature. I don't know how it would apply to the FD though.
I wouldn't do it.
btw..your sig says 'coming soon'..I've seen a CYM FD running around Manassas a couple of times...near Libera Ave and Rt 28...was that you?

Don't Do it the car will NEVER be operating at the correct temp - the ECU really wants to see 195-205deg water temp and freeks if the temp goes over 220 or is below 175

No, that could have been someone testing one of PFS's CYMs for sale.
I just sold my Black R1 about two weeks ago and I'll be looking for a good clean CYM in the fall.

There's a Black R1 at Maximum deals just off of Manassas drive that just showed up. That's not your car is it? 64K miles, PFS exhaust?

OIC. That's right, I forgot that Farrell still has those 2 CYM's down there.

you should never remove a thermostat on any car rotary or piston engine. your coolant sensor will never get an accurate reading, the front side of your engine will always run cooler than the rear (due to the coolant going directly to the engine without having the thermostat to regulate the temp.

CYM's are hard to find, so good luck. But man they're great looking.

I do not run a themostat during the summer but will be putting one back in for the winter. I keep my stat out for the summer only because It I want cooler temps and I drive hard as **** on a side note if you get the sytem bleed really well it will get to operating temps and never go below 170 deg. but during the winter it does tend to drop a little bit more than that so I will be putting a miata stat in over the spring (180 deg.) I have had no ill effects so far and I have heard a lot of storys about hot spotting and such but I dont think it will considering I keep it at constant pressur but who knows I will see when I blow it(hopefully not soon)

I don't know about rx7's, but if you remove the thermostat and the engine never reaches operating temp, it will run in open-loop mode and use tons of gas. The computer thinks the car is always heating up. This happened on my old Probe. Bad gas mileage, and very black spark plugs.
