Driving hoodless?

Hey I am planning on driving my fd hoodless in the summer since the previous owner was an idiot and replaced the intake box with two shitty auto zone intake filter cones who are right next to each other and exposed to all the motor heat. For safety measures till I purchase a legit intake, now is it safe to drive it that way? Any thoughts? Previous experience?

That sounds pretty dumb. Just drive with the hood on. There's way too much to steal leaving the car without a hood plus water damage or animals chewing up your wire. What other mods have been done to the car?

Plus the sun baking the wires probably ain't good for it either.

While some people debate the whole open air intake verses cold air intake thing to death, you aren't going to blow your motor up with an open air intake. Put the hood on and shop for an intake you feel comfortable with...

Im pretty sure its illegal to drive hoodless. I could be wrong about that but you will get pulled over in a minute. Open intakes wont blow up your motor, If you want to feel safer theres a ton of ways to channel cold air to it. Just watch AITs and dont boost when their high.

Probably would yes, I am just trying to find an alternative to the hot air the intake cones are sucking in, with out purchasing an intake since I'll be going single turbo anyway

yea you should drive it with the hood on..that is unless the real reason you want to do it is to "be cool" driving around with no hood on, if that's the case then do what you want.

But the advise says you should leave your hood on

dude, plenty of have driven FDs with the so called "hot" air intake...not gunna cause any issues.

I would 10/10 times rather drive hard/fast with open air intakes then without a hood...if you reasoning for driving without a hood really is because your worried about the intake temps.

On a similar note...I'd say 80% of guys running single turbos run a "hot" air intake with no direct ducting for outside cold air.

are you running an oem intercooler? Why not pick up a stock intake on the cheap?

So, you are planning to take off the hood every time you drive the car, and then re-install the hood when you park it. And this is to keep hot air from entering the intakes?

Is that right?

Not really looking for "coolness" I came from owning an e46 m3, 05 Evo and 05 sti and this fd is by far the only one with excessive engine bay heat n it's scaring the crap out of me, I'll be looking for more alternatives thanks for the feed back guys, this forum is not as bad as someone people stated, NASIOC was a great and supportive forum, thanks again

yea don't worry too much about it mate, just leave your hood open after driving when possible. (within reason, i only do it at my house or friends/family's houses)

Also, perhaps don't get on the gas too much from a standstill - to allow cool air to flush through the engine bay after heat soaking.

I have DD my FD with open intakes for over 5 years.

A good intercooler will do a good job of cooling the hot air.

So your saying that the air that the auto zone filters are sucking in is hotter...beause they are auto zone filters? If you're worried about the temps being too hot why not upgrade to an after market intercooler? Also most of the intakes I have seen out there, the filters are pretty much right next to each other (on twins). I think driving without a hood would just be dumb. Especially for that reason. Your profile says your in NY. I'm in va where it gets hotter and that thought would never cross my mind. Leave your hood on man. If your looking for a stock intake system I may have one available in the next few days. Let me know

lmao your are missing the point here, you are in a whole different ball game, shitty filters don't mean hot air lmao, they are exposed to hot air with out a divider is the point, and my plan is single turbo in the long run, now why would I mod if my setup will be totally different from the goal is, no need for intercooler, going fmic, and if your selling your stock intake cool I'll be more than glad to grab it from you

Driving without the hood just makes you look like a punk kid and generally looks stupid imo. Curious to see your plans for a cold air intake for your single conversion....

just go to homedepot/lowes and get a really cheap piece of sheet metal and make a super cheap heat shield. I have been running no hood because of my plenum and it makes it harder to make plans since you can't drive in the rain. On a side note if your engine bay doesn't look like the following it will just be dumb looking to be without your hood!

Pretty sure its illegal in most states, just like driving with no bumper. Something about pedestrian impact safety. Plus it will look really silly.
