Downpipe Question

Alright I'm starting some reliability modding and first 3 up are a boost gauge, an AST, and a downpipe. Would I need a retune or PowerFC to run the downpipe safely or is that only necessary if I'm changing the midpipe? Also, would anyone recommend the rx7store.net downpipe? Thanks alot.

Installing a downpipe will be fine. You need to worry when you install a midpipe. I have the RX-7 Store downpipe. The fitment is OK, but I have a little exhaust leak where it mates with the main cat. I believe the issue has been corrected on their newer versions. They originally designed it to be used with their midpipe.

I'd do:
  1. Boost gauge
  2. Downpipe
  3. Fuel Filter change
  4. Rat's nest hose replacement
  5. Fuel pulsation dampener replacement
  6. Injector cleaning/blueprinting
  7. AST replacement
  8. Radiator replacement
A lot of people have had great success with the rx7 store products. I prefer the Pettit unit myself. You can't really retune the stock ECU, and a PowerFC is $$$$ and is worse than stock if you DON'T tune it right.
I would just say to start by getting a boost gauge, and see if the car is boosting right. Often times there are subtle little leaks in the various flexible connectors that will show up as loss of boost, and you need to make sure you are getting the 8-10-8 pattern to ensure you have working 'rat's nest' components.
The stock radiator and AST are likely okay for now, these things either work or blow out (at admittedly inconvenient times).

Thumbs up

The Bonez S/S DP I bought from Rotary Performance ("RX-7.com") some years ago had no wrench clearance at the manifold mounting flange, so I returned it for replacement. They responded immediately with a new one which worked fine, at no cost. So I can recommend them and the Bonez pipe, but have no experience with other suppliers.

Yeah, but any shop that is familiar with this will (or should!) charge about $1000 in labor.
God how I hate changing that fuel filter!

And...this shouldn't have anything to do with "smelling like gas" when you start up....

thats the very least because if u can get things cheaper at other places but u choose this place then its 100% ur fault

BUT
when u authorise the payment for a certain amount, and then on ur credit card ur charged wayyyy more... you call and ask WHY? they say its a mistake..its been 4 months and still didnt get my money back. i must have called 10 times by now, left voicemail messages and they always say your refund is on the way.
Somehow is on the way but never manages to reach me haha

rx7.com parts are known for good fitment and great customer service. highly recommend that downpipe and their high flow cat as well.

I agree, but not necessarily in that order. Unless I had some problems, I'd leave the injectors and vacuum (rat's nest) hose replacement to last. I also would definitely add an aftermarket temperature gauge in there somewhere near the top....the OEM gauge is worthless. Coolant is generally easiest.
Regardless of order, nothing in that list would require a PFC. And forget the midpipe. Read the stickys and search under "boost creep" and you'll know why.

Has anyone tried the downpipe+midpipe combo they have on rx7store? i heard it doesn't fit too great with jdm fds and also the midpipe is 1" short to the catback?? Not a bad price for a combo tho $225ish.

I think this is a good list as well. Although I agree with SgtBlue on the injector cleaning. I would not really get into that unless you have issues. I would go in and replace the vac lines if they appear to be the original lines. That is just asking for problems if there is not one already a subtle one there. (just remember to replace them one and a time and don't get in a hurry, this is gonna take HOURS...) The radiator replacement is not TOTALLY necessary if these are the only mods. My temps ran very good with the stock radiator (as long as the undertray is there).

Another addition to the list I do have is changing the plugs and spark wires. This is something I would do on a yearly basis until you begin to modify the car more and then I would change the plugs more often.

Also, you NEED to really inspect the oil metering lines and make sure they are not cracked and leaking oil. This would indicate they need replaced and NOW. If those are leaking you can cause catastrpohic damage to the motor.
