Downpipe or Catback?

Allright so last October I sold my 83 RX-7 and took out a loan to nab me a 93 RX-7 at a good price because the guy who bought it couldnt insure it due to aircare issues.

Turns out he bottomed out the car and broke the cat converter and I have yet to buy a new one. Thus leading me to the question do I get a downpipe or a catback?

Im not worries about emissions because I dont have aircare where I live and from what I have read im not going to loose mileage by switching to a downpipe.

So what are the major differences between the two and what do you recommend purchasing?

If i get a catback i will be going with the bonez high flow catback and I have yet to really look at the downpipes yet because the idea just kind of popped in my head.

Thanks for your time guys and hope to hear some good feedback

Do you mean downpipe or main-cat?

If you still have the stock pre-cat in your car then you should get rid of that asap.

If you've got a hole in your main catalytic converter (midpipe) than you should really fix that as well. Why not do them both at the same time?

A catback is basically a rear muffler, and the pipe to it from the catalytic converter. A downpipe replaces the precat that goes from the engine to the catalytic converter. A downpipe is a very good mod for our cars. Read the FAQ

Now that I have a fail thread going on what I meant was, yes I have an exhaust leak in my main cat and It has to be replaced and what I was meaning was do i get a catless downpipe or do i get a downpipe with a catconverter?

Sorry about that >.<

^turbos--->downpipe--->catalytic converter--->cat-back

There are several decent choices for a downpipe. Because of the extra heat look for good thick flanges, stainless is nice but not absolutely necessary. I prefer those that have the flange to mount the downstream end to the transmission case...but again not absolutely necessary. Check the 3rd Gen. Parts-For-Sale section or one of the forum sponsors for new.
Bonez is a great choice for a cat. Even though you don't have emissions testing, since the car is new to you I would NOT recommend a mid-pipe (replaces cat). There is an increase in noise and smell. And some risk of boost creep.

Edit: Your sig says you have a 92? No such thing was sold in North America. Do you have a RHD model? If so, you must go with something like a HKS downpipe which accomodates the steering shaft.

Someone may have used the date of manufacture...but not sure about RHD. All the LHD models were all marketed as 1993 or later.

best to stick with a stock main cat until you have fueling to go with a main-cat (midpipe) replacement.

My goal was to replace most of the stock parts in the long run. That was the reason why i purchased a completely stock one. Only thing setting me back is the cost because I have to go replace my power steering pump considering the pulley fell off while I was driving the other day and my second turbo is leaking >.<

I get some extra cash at the end of the month tho so I might go out and replace the entire exhaust system. The power steering pump will be purchasing this wed so thats not a big problem. Any ideas on a good Catback? Or some good brands that I can look into?

Thanks again for all your help guys, despite the fail thread >.<
