Door weight

I just picked up a new door shell from Mazda and threw it on the scales.

Door shell, completely empty, primer only was 41lbs.

Interesting side note, this door has an additional crash bar (?) that is cylindrical below the crash bar seen in the original door. Never seen one before.

And get you killed in the process, unless you have a cage with door bars at which point some of the weight savings would be negligible with said required cage.

uh...yeah...but cage and stock door is still heavier than cage and CF doors.

Besides I don't see anywhere that anyone said anything about racing.....

That's fairly heavy. Once you load the door up it'll probably almost double that. I can see where CF would be a huge advantage.

I've got a complete door to weigh (w/o extra crash bar) and will report it's weight. I didn't think 41lbs for the door is heavy, have you weighed any other doors? FC doors have to weigh quite a bit more.

I don't know what a "huge" advantage is but I imagine that a CF door will save about 20lbs max. Does anyone have the weight of a CF shell? Also the lack of a crash bar(s) doesn't make it quite an apples to apples comparison.

41lbs for a door isn't bad. i bet that extra crash bar adds like >1lb too....

Yeah I remember the doors on my FC were so long and heavy that if the wind caught the thing it would take all my strength to hold it back. The interior handle would bow out and flex from the strain because they were so heavy and made with thick steel. Even the hood on that car was monstrous. It had to weigh 60 lbs. Compared to an aluminum hood it's like twice as heavy.

Agreed.
I actually added weight to mine in the form of silicone caulk between the crash-bar followed by spray undercoating. The car wasn't noticibly slower. I'd rather I loose a couple pounds than loose it from the car.
