Dome light in the trunk!?!
I have owned my third gen for over a year now... and just discovered there is a switched light in the hatch as I was blowing off some steam giving the FD some TLC.
Now the question, did any of you guys realize there is a light in the hatch, or is this still me shaking off the newbieness...
just curious. This car never ceases to surprise me one way or another.

You should check out the engine! It has no pistons, no timing belt or cams! It's insane!
The FD is a very unusual car, you'll find a lot more cool stuff. I love the light in the doorlocks, but on most cars it's broken. Very easy fix.

Congrats on your still new FD. That's the beauty with these FDs. You're always learning something new about them.
Try this.
1. Lower your windows all the way.
2. Get out of the car.
3. Now reach in from the outside and unlock the door from the inside. You'll see your retractable lights going up and down.
It's a security feature on the FDs.

On mine if you hold the horn and the flashers it muffles when the flashers go on/off. BAAmmmBAAmmmBAAmmmBAAmmm
Don't forget the lazy eye! Hit the headlight flip switch really fast and the motors can't keep up. They start alternating!

I did the same thing myself about a week ago when I was installing my sub.
If you want lazy eyes just go into one of the fuseboxes in the engine bay. Its called "Retractor". Just pull it out, and turn on your lights (they wont go up) at that point make contact with the fuse and right away take it away that should raise them a tad bit. If you missed the spot you want repeat the process. Although it can be kind of cool it will break your headlight covers in the process to keep driving around that way.

The lock is held on with 3 screws behind the cover on the inside of the door, remove those and unclip the plastic clip that holds the metal rod to the actual lock in place. Now you can remove the outside doorhandle/lock assembly. The light is held in place by a piece of rubber. Just solder in a new bulb or LED.

It's just a bulb that back lights the little area around they keyhole, not like a spot light or anything . Don't you have to lift up on the door handle or something for it to turn on? Mine have never worked so I'm not sure but I do remember people talking about it.
And I had no idea there was a light in the trunk, I've owned my FD for almost 3 years now and never realized that . That was actually one thing that really bugged me, I'd get home late at night and go to get my backpack or something out of the hatch and couldn't see a damn thing! I'll have to investigate this when I go pick it up later today haha. Although with my luck this will be one of the features Mazda decided not to include on the R1 models .
