im not sure exactly what it is, it may be behind the dash or the engine bay. with the motor on its like a small ticking/buzzing sound. it lightly increases with engine speed.

my corolla used to do that. i suspected it had something to do with the spedometer mechanism but i never checked into it.

There were a few threads in the past about the hard brake lines (which run horizontally across the car and are attached to the firewall) vibrating against the firewall and making a buzzing sound. Maybe that's it. IIRC, there was a TSB about it that basically said to use a new rubber mount, or something similar, to isolate the line from the firewall.

Mine was making a weird buzzing noise, then my ignition switch shorted out heh. Looked worse than it was considering a bright glow kept coming from the turn signal light stick... hole.

mine's doing this too. but only at highway speeds like 70 and above. and it's like a loud buzzing instead of a rattle. Any ideas. oh yeah and it comes from behind the instrument cluster

The ticking/buzzing sound that is fixed by the brake line TSB mentioned above, is typically only heard at idle or very light throttle. It goes away once under throttle.

If you are hearing a noise at 40 mph under throttle, it is NOT the hard brake line!
