Does An FD Have A Rubber Shift Boot??
Hey Guys,
Just trying to clarify something. From what I understand, the FC has a rubber boot which sits under the leather boot for the and acts as an insulator of sorts to prevent heat from dissipating into the cabin from the exhaust/tranny. I am going to be swapping out my shifter fluid and putting new bushings in, but I am curious as to whether the FD has this rubber boot. Does the FD have this same rubber boot as the FC?? If anyone has any onfo on this it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys.

It's very similar to the FC's setup. There's a metal boot that bolts to the tranny with 3 bolts, then a rubber outer boot, then finally the "leather" outer trim boot. The innermost boot that bolts to the tranny is identical to the FC - it's an ancient Mazda part number that they've used forever.
As stated, you can't fill the fluid from the shift lever's hole, but I think you're asking since you'll be putting new bushings in.

^ what you see above is the outer shifter boot, which is mostly an insulator to cover the hole in the tranny tunnel. It's got a couple of extra round rubber insulators that go on top, which are on the left of the pic.
There is another rubber boot that is tightly fit around the shifter lever and bolts directly into the tranny shifter housing. From what I can tell, this one is the one that really holds the shifter snugly in place and puts the pressure on the wave washers and bushings. Aftermarket short shifters don't use this part.

wow, thanks for the responses guys. ok, so I looked up the mazdatrix site, and it looks like there are a couple of things I should look into doing if I were to completely re-vamp the shifter:
the upper section of the inner boot
the lower section of the inner boot
the groove bushing
the upper bushing located around the pivot point of the shift lever (right around the groove bushing)
the lower bushing located around the pivot point of the shift lever (right around the groove bushing)
the lower bushing that goes below the shifter I've already got, but does anyone know what the mazda part numbers are for the above parts, especially for the bushings above?? I am going to have to break open the shifter and see whether or not the boots need to be replaced, but I figured I might as well replace the bushings while I'm in there, I do have a bit of slop on the shifter feel. Anyone have any idea what the part numbers are?
Actually, good point about filling the tranny fluid. I thought that there was a second compartment within the shifter mechanism that was specifically for the shifter and did not go into the tranny itself (or at least that's what i got told on a thread a few months back). So then the entire shift lever is dry then?? I know on my old car, I had to put a bit of axel grease on the bottom of the lever at the bottom pivot point. But for the FD, is the entire mechanism dry?? I thought that there would be a pool of fluid in there that sits independant of the tranny fluid.
