My 1995 US Spec model used R134a from the factory. I assume the 99 models are the same. R134a uses quick disconnect type fittings for the high and low sides. R12 has screw-on type fittings.

Thanks a bunch, I'll start looking for some R134a in that case, luckily I won't have to get certified or anything to buy it so that's a relief!

The US converted to R12 in 1995. I THINK Japan either converted a little earlier or a little later.

But I'm 99% sure by '99 it was 134a.

Purely out of curiosity, what was the build date on your car? I know that they made the switch somewhere around that time. My '94 originally had an r12 system with an 01/94 build date.

July 20th 1993 (start of version 2) is when the change from R12 to R134a happened. This is approximately when the 1994 models began for North America too. Refrigerant amounts are different for RHD, but I'm not awake enough to look through the 7/93 workshop manual right now. Also, the procedure is quite specific (identical to 20b Cosmo). When I'm closer to the finish line on the wiring book, I'll take a look at this next.
