Disappearing Check light?
So ever since I got my car My engine check lite was on with the EGR as not working. To night when I was leaving my GF's house I noticed I had a little more power than usual (when check light is on your engine retards itself) so I look down and the light is off. Only thing I had changed was an O2 sensor a few days ago. Just wondering why the the EGR would just start working again. and yes the engine checklight is still wokring I turned on and off the car jsut to make sure the light went on for the split second when you turn on the car.

California cars and '94s have the feedback EGR valve. There's a switch on the EGR valve that trips when it moves - basically, the ECU tells the EGR vacuum solenoid to operate, it applies vacuum to the EGR valve, then the switch on the EGR valve confirms back to the ECU that it operated.
It's quite possible your EGR valve was stuck and happened to pop free.
I don't think the ECU should put the car in a limp mode for the EGR valve - I'd have to look it up, I don't think there's a failsafe.

Well this moring it came back on for about 2 min. then it went off. then I got gas and when I started it back up it was on for the rest of the way home. I was quoted $420 for a new EGR I dont want to pay it if I dont have to.
yeah its a 93 california car.
yeah dubble check about the limp mode, but I was told from a rotarty shop as long as the light is on the engine retards itself.

The EGR on our cars is damn near useless anyhow - there's a good reason why Mazda ditched the system in '95.
I doubt your EGR valve itself is bad - either it needs to be cleaned out, or some other simple problem. If it is bad, you should be able to find a good used California EGR valve cheap. There's no reason to buy a new one.
If you really wanted to get crafty, you can wire a relay into that circuit to fool the ECU.

Last time I had the UIM off, I broke the nipple off the EGR solenoid. Now, when the car warms up and calls for EGR, turns on the check engine light, which stays on until I turn the car off. Annoying, but I just ignore it for now. Haven't noticed any performance difference. Definately not retarding the timing.

Well in that case Ill just leave it if it is not retarding the timing. I dont need a smog for another 2 years. and I can deal with the light for now while I get other things fixed. thanks for the help guys

I had the same problem with the egr valve. after spending the $400.00 plus dollars to fix it it returned again. so to fix the problem I purchased a Federal ecu and replaced the california ecu which doesn't look for the egr sensor. problem solved. or you can do the relay thing like Dale Clark said. search the 4 sale section for a Federal ecu.
