Difference between auto and manual harness?

Hi guys, I've searched and found the auto to manual harness conversion thread, but it doesn't talk about the physical differences between the 2 harnesses. The thread focused on adapting the manual wiring to the AT connector. I don't want to have to mess with pins, as I think there is a better solution.

As far as I can tell, the 2 harnesses are identical except for the blue X05/X14 connectors as mentioned in the conversion thread. Of course, the manual harness has the manual trans plugs. Are there any other differences?

If none, could I rip up my manual transmission subharness (blue connector, probably connected to the manual trans plugs), and use that in conjunction with the auto harness? There would be no cutting of connectors/resoldering/repinning involved.

The motivation? I found a nice auto wiring harness, and manual ones are often crispier than Colonel Sander could ever hope to achieve with his 7 secret spices.

well the auto will have a neutral safety switch.. the manual will have a clutch switch.... I'm pretty sure folks have used the auto harness for manuals.

Thanks, that's the exact same thread I found some time back.

What Tim did in that thread was to use a MANUAL harness in an AUTO car.

I'm trying to do the inverse, i.e., use an AUTO harness in a MANUAL car.

Are there any differences aside from the transmission subharness? I figure this tranny subharness would consist of:

blue plug --- wires --- 4 tranny plugs for manual
blue plug --- wires --- ???? for auto

7envy, I got your pm, and to be honest I can't recall how the wiring went. It was too long ago But are you saying you have a manny and you want to drop an auto harness in? Is there a reason why? It's probably not my business but the best thing you could do is use the wiring diagrams and figure which ones you need, and strip the rest. This is what I did, kinda made a custom harness. and got rid of about half of the wires in the harness. Of course, I scrapped all the emissions and ran parallel, so I didn't need a lot of the wires. I wish I could help more, but i don't remember too many specifics anymore.

Colonel Sanders got to my harness... and I found a really good auto harness at a price I couldn't give up.

I don't want to do any stripping.... noooooo.....

NO need to mess with the auto harness at all, just use the auto harness as it came from the factory. Just jumper the two largest male spade pins on the big auto trans connector. That will allow the starter to turn. You can use all the auto harnesses and the car will run perfectly. No need to over think it. You will need to wire in reverse lights and if it is that big of a deal the clutch switch.

Question Regarding David's Comment About the Clutch Switch

So David you mentioned you could wire in a clutch switch - My car was an auto to manual conversion. Right now I am finishing the installation of the two auto connectors (X-05 and X14) into a manual harness. But for the clutch switch - do I ground one side of the switch and take the other to 1Q in the yellow connector 1 at the ECU?

Do you know where to connect the clutch switch to the cruise control?

jeff
