did my second turbo bite the dust?

well heres the story. for about a week i had a nice 13 psi on my first turbo but at the transition it would drop to like 7 and after the transiton it would build to 8 and hold steady. it felt like it jsut fell on its face when the second turbo happend, real slow feeling. then the other night i was racing a mustang and when the second turbo came on it made a real high pithed wistle/whine noise. it was not like the usual turbo noise but much much louder and funny sounding whine, so wierd even my girlfriend asked what was that noise. i said, hell if i know. so i thought it may be a fluke or related to why i had low boost on second turbo. so i got into the gas again it only had like 6-7 psi on #2 and had that horrible noise again, i immediatly let off and have not gotten into the second turbo again yet. does anyone have any idea what is going on? any help will be greatly appreciated, and please feel free to ask any questions, thanks, scott

mods= intake, dp, high flo cat, cat back, ecu

Mine will make the same sound sometimes.
To me it sounds like when you have no BoV or its to tight and all the boost goes back and hits the turbo.
But i know for me its not the BoV cause its still stock.

is it like a bearing type whine? metal on metal?
its not a cure or a fix, but when my friends TII with 160K on the engine and turbos changed to synthetic, the turbos didn't whine as much or as loud. The better lubricating of the synthetic helped some. try it and see. You coming to the dyno thursday or dallas friday, maybe we can figure something out. Take off the hardpipes leading to the turbo inlets and check the turbos endplay and rotate them to listen for any grinding noise.

If it is a hissing noise then... check all the possible leaks.
Can you descrobe the noise at all?

best wishes jc.

Thanks guys for the replies. tim, probably not thurs. i have to sign lease papers that night, but friday i will be there. and about the nosie, sorry i dont know how to describe it, it kinda sounds like its rubbing the side of the housing, or thats what i fear it is, maybe it sounds like, kazam-whapow the turbos i believe to be fairly new, i bought the car a year ago and it has the newer style turbo's with the pills built into the nipples instead of the lines, but i guess i will have to take them off to find out, thanks, scott

Scott, could you repeat that sound for me one more time? haha...I am having trouble too but I don't have the noise. I just don't make the boost. Mine are going to about 10psi then drop to 8 and hold. I hvae the ecu that should be getting me around 13psi. I hope you can find your problem. Give me a call if you need any help.

when you say ecu that should be getting you 13, is it the pettit or M2? if so, they don't control boost in that they just provide maps up to a certain point...mainly since most people have more open exhaust and intake, boost goes up, they just have maps that will match the improved air flow, not control boost by changing the duty cycle. When I had the M2 stage 3, Brian asked my a couple times what boost was I seeing with my setup and said if I start going over 13, I'd need a boost controller.

I have a 3" exhaust all the way through with m2 dp, hi flow cat, apexi cb. Apexi intake and pettit ecu. On the dyno I could watch the boost more closely and saw a pretty constant 13 psi.

Hey slopoke, you obviously fried the turbo shaft with the bearings- really high pitched whhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiinnne? You betcha, sorry for the bad news, I work with alot of turbos and that also happened to me about 7months ago. No rebuild kit will help-it's the shaft and bearings-You kissed them goodbye for the last time.

TT, yeah, I'd think you should be around 13 psi with that setup. Weird that your not making 10 and 8 now, when you were making more before. Boost leak from around the y-pipe to crossover pipe in the silicon/rubber coupler perhaps.

yep, to make sure it aint a small job like a coupler, get that out of the way first. sucks man, something similar happened to me on Saturday. A Mustang GT was like "you wanna go!?" stupid question. So we went. off the line we were neck and neck and just as started pulling away at around 4-5k rpm's, my car fell on it's ***. just didn't accelerate anymore. I was like, "what the ****!?" and the son-of-a-bitch won. stupid mother f'er thought he was the **** too. dumb piece of... Anyway, I would of clearly over-beaten him, but hey, that's how it goes when you aint got the loot to keep your baby healthy. Funny thing is, the next day (yesterday) a suped 240SX pulls up at a light and revs. we go and then I go...off into the night leaving his slow *** way, and I mean way behind. weird how I loose to a slow stock GT, but destroy a modded 240 with my stock 7.

Sorry, I didn't mean to rant and not lend a hand with your problem, but I guess you could check out your couplers and 1" hoses for leaks. oh and check for cracks.
