as a daily highway driver?

Taking Into Account Of Course All The Reliability MoDs, Can An Fd Be A Reliable Daily Driver When 95% Of The Commute Is Highway Miles. That 95% By The Way Translates Into Approx. 160 Miles/Day. Now Before Anyone Jumps On Me I Know There Are BeTter Cars For A Long Commute, But I Can Only Afford One Car At The Moment AnD What's More Fun To Drive Than An Fd?! Plus The Commute Is Only Temporary. Please Excuse The Weird Placed Caps Forum Isn't ToO Phone Friendly lol

I've gotten at best 19 mpg with all highway driving.

Beware of high water temp in the summer with stop and go traffic.

I've had very good luck with mine as a highway commuter, and I always wanted an auto specifically because of the commuting. Its been very good.
If you are not mechanically inclined or do not want to work on the car yourself or do much in the way of maintenance, walk away now. They are not a Toyota.

Search the forums for further opinions.

Ya I'm aware of the maintenance which is what i want, I'm tired of owning new cars full of computers and can't really get greasy with them on a Saturday Mornin ya know what i mean. I'm more concerned with not breaking down stupidly goin highway speed, that kind of stuff

Sorry to rain on the parade, but you can only afford one car, and you need to commute 160 miles a day? I'll be surprised if you have the car in 6 months.

As in it won't be running in 6 months? don't get me wrong I'm not broke, money isn't an issue, repairs and replacement parts will be done as needed. it's a deal i made with wifey, I'll spare you the details. I should have said she will only let me buy 1 car. For now.

As in it was a finicky car 20+ yrs ago when it was new. And the FD isn't like wine, it doesn't improve with age. I know you're excited about the car now and motivated. We were all there. But if you have to depend on the car for a paycheck, working on it constantly gets old. Especially so if you have to fix something after work so it's ready the next day. And say....the wife would rather go out for dinner.

I would not get an FD as your only car, especially with that long of a commute everyday.

solution:

buy corolla for 3k

drive it for 6 months to commute, save your money

sell corolla for 2500

buy FD

Honestly if you want a reliable daily, find a mid 90s Honda. Great fuel economy and super easy to work on, plus the parts are everywhere. You could find a nice one for 2-3k, then save up however long that takes you to make back, and buy your FD.

The very last thing I want to do is drive a boring Honda, I would probably fall asleep on the road and destroy it before 6 months. MR2 turbo however, is actually a good thought... Thanks for all the input fellas, I'm definitely thinking twice about it.

Like everyone here, I recommend having 2 cars and use the FD for weekend fun and cruise. I have a MX-6 as my daily, 200hp JDM motor with all bolt-ons, cheap to build and way more fun than Civic and Corolla, decent gas mileage about 26mpg with 90% highway use, and it is reliable.

Definitely get a second car. FD was my only car for 3 or 4 years...like mentioned already, its a nightmare trying to fix it before work the next day. Getting a daily was best thing I ever did, now I enjoy the FD much more.

One more issue with these wonderful cars is getting parts. Many things are hard to source locally, right down to spark plugs. Sorry, but I'm reluctant to give kudos to any 20+ year old car as an only car and daily driver. GTi or WRX perhaps? (flame-on's welcomed!)

I guess this time my wife was right. She said I should buy my fd as a second car later. All I wanna know is... How much did she pay you all?!

it would be cool for about a month; then your FD will start having problems and you'll park it for a long time and you'll start posting in the lounge.

If its 160 mile round trip... No. This is not the car for you at the right time of your life.

For instance, I have a business trip I need to take next week upstate, 200km away. My options are FD for a 4 hour trip or bus full of employees for 6 hours straight.

I'm leaning towards the horrible bus. Because if something goes wrong, there are no towns out there, and no phone reception. And the FD could well decide to give trouble. It most likely wont, but I'm too paranoid and I value the car too much to rack up miles on it just for some stupid business trip I dont want to go on.

I will give you my 100% honest feedback....

Get a nice economy car to commute 160 miles a day. It may be boring but it will be a money saver in the long run when it comes to fuel cost...

As far as an FD as a daily driver it DOES perfectly fine.... I really don't know why everyone is so skeptical and negative....

I bought my FD and used it EVERY day for about 8 months. I work in the field with my personal cars and on average drive about 100 miles a day in stop n go traffic with very little highway. I had ZERO problems with my FD during that time. The reason why I got a daily was because of all the rock chips and dings she started getting...

Also, both my sons drove their FD's on a daily basis for 3 yrs with no A/C... NEVER an issue except oil changes and plugs. They finaly got daily drivers because they wanted to have automatics with A/C due to the amount of driving from school to work to gym....

So can an FD be used as a daily driver ? YES speaking from my personal experience....

Buy an old cheap Honda. That way, you can save up to get a new wife.

I hadnt had much time , but I DD my FD for a year , in that year I had a few breakdowns

FIrst my fuel pump wiring melted , Then a fuel line burst , THeeen my clutch went , Then After driving it for 2 thousand miles striaght . my engine blew from low oil pressure . which was an issue the car had from the start .

Now be warned I abused , raced , auto-xed my car every chance I got. and the car was modified .

When I get my car back on the road I plan to daily it again , because driving the FD every day made driving fun .. playing with boost one day , or trying to get hte best MPG's another .

It just made it fun , yes its NOT the most practical car.. but you know what.. honestly I dont care. I'm not the most practical person .

If driving for you is a passion . then I say go for it . There may be issues . But all the problems I had were because of things that had been done poorly and most of the issues were fixed in a day .. except for the rebuild . which has taken much longer because I chose to well do something special .

Relying on an FD as your only means of transportation is a mistake.
