daily drivers of FD-your shift point???

I just noticed how low of a RPM i found myself shifting this morning to work and came across a thought.
I want to ask all you FD daily drivers @ what RPM point or range are you shifting in the FD.
considering that you are not at the track(public road) what is the ideal shift range for daily driving.

I think, i may have developed a bad habit with the FD and wanted to re-evaluate my driving with other daily drivers.
Thanks

in traffic usually 2,500-3,000 on open road it'll vary for me anywhere near 3500-5000

As long as you don't lug the engine it is up to you when you want to shift. Low rpm shifting for economy (as much as it is possible with the car), higher rpms for performance.

When speed limits are ~ 40 - 45 MPH the FD tends to coast with traffic the best in 4th gear which means I am shifting around 3KRPMs in 3rd to 4th. For some reason I find I stay in first longer than I stay in 2nd... I tend to throw out of second rather quickly. A bad habit probably

It depends.

Typically I drive it like an old man. I catch myself cruising in 5th gear down residential streets.

However, sometimes I open it up if the traffic isn't too bad.

I'll typically shift anywhere from 3500-5000. Though I do try to make a point of doing at least one full boost high rpm run a day... babying the car all the time will make it easier for carbon to build up on the rotors/seals.

Course.. I'm also running A/I, so the high boost/high rpm run counts double since I'm steam cleaning the internals at the same time ^_^

interesting, it seems that 3.5 --4.5 is about right for DDing the FD.
for some reason I am trying to get up to the 5th gear as soon as possible with out considering the fact( forgetting more like) that rpm need to match the speed of the car.

Exactly! But I almost always give it at least one full-throttle run up to at least 7K through 2nd and 3rd each time I have it out.

yea I agree with most above, I like to shift around 3K when around town, don't want RPMs to drop below 2k so around 3k usually works. I feel like if i get to 3.5K when barely touching the throttle then I can feel the spool transition and shifting seems like an abrupt interruption, if that makes sense.

With an open road and cruising usually I'll shift past that point and shift around 4K

usually around 4k unless I feel like something else.

This does bring up something I ran into on a road trip. Driving south for 4 hours, I was at 70-75 (5 over) with cruise control all the way there, only went onto boost twice, and only to 5 psi. Filled up down there, I got 21mpg. Dad drives back up going 80+ most of the way back, alot of WOT. He managed 23mpg. I am wondering if the FD gets better mileage when it is at a higher rpm?

First off.. You managed 20+ mpg!! I'm happy for 13mpg, ecstatic for 15 and I think I'd **** myself if I made 17!!! I tend to average 10-12 on everyday driving (with lots of boost mixed in!)

I think it depends entirely on IDC.. I've always noticed the best mpg on road trips down to my tuner where I tend to go about 60-70mph the entire way and I stay out of boost almost entirely.

Well your sig leads me to believe you have some mods. I am stock other than a DP. For most of my daily driving I get 14-16 mpg. I've noticed this kind of highway mileage before, getting better mileage if I go faster (to a point...), so I am wondering if it helps to get the engine more into its torque band.

I always shift before 3k when I'm just driving. Either that, or I always shift at 8k. what's the point of the inbetween range?

Plus 3k is perfect, in each gear it's usually a speed limit.

I get around 20 mpg on most trips..Got a few minor problems atm so I cant boost the car if I want my engine to live.. Often find myself below 2krpm in town. With a full un restricted exhaust, going above 3krpm is pretty loud & tend not to when not on open roads.

I usually go 3k normal driving. I also try to boost at least once per trip.

I feel like the shift is smoother w/ my clutch if I shift @ 3.5-4k.

Over the years it's depended a little bit on my setup (seq twins, non-seq twins, single), but I typically cruise at 3k rpms and upshift at 3.5-4k rpms. I don't DD my car anymore, but I did for about 5 years
