I've lived in CA for 12 years and most of that time have had heavily modified cars (including a bright yellow Integra Type-R for 4 years) and have never once got pulled over at random. I guess it depends on the area that you live in.

I have always dreamed of living ina nice cali area. but.. f- that. i live in MI and have never even heard of smog testing.
never heard of a cop asking someone to pop their hood

the only way you get in trouble here with your car is driving it like an idiot, or window tint.

Same here, the police will pull you over, only for speeding.

Here in Georgetown KY, there are no emissions tests, no visual inspection, in fact there's not really any inspection of any kind. Here's what you have to go through when you get a car registered:

You: "Hi DMV Lady, I just bought a car and need to get it registered."
DMV Lady: "Can I see your title and proof of insurance?
You: "Sure"
DMV Lady: "OK let's go out in the parking lot and do the inspection . . ."

*go out to your car*

DMV Lady: "Yep, looks like the VIN on the title matches the VIN on the car. You're good to go. That will be five dollars please."

You can drive basically ANYTHING on the road here as long as there is a VIN on the car that matches the one on your title. You could basically weld a Ford Taurus VIN plate to a NASCAR racer and drive it on the street.

I DD'd a heavily modified(and obviously way over the legal sound limit) FD for years and never got pulled over either, it really depends where you live..So. Cal is supposed to be a lot worse when it comes to that, probably because they have a lot more street racing in the LA area.

And Id personally much rather DD a FD than a Kia, FD's make driving fun, Kia's make it painful.

I live in souther cal. San Diego actually where Davin was living and I've never had that kind of harrasment in my FD.

The only time I was asked to pop my hood is because I was racing. Which at point it's understandable. Hopefully it will stay that way.

It's easy here in Brenham tx too. When getting a new car registered they don't compare titles to the vin number, they don't look at the car, they do ask for proof of insurance, but even if you don't have proof of insurance they'll usually still register it. No emissions tests, no visual smog equipment inspection. I just got my FD inspected with wires showing on the back tires, and no cat or air pump. I did pop the hood, but that's because he wanted to see all the cool **** under there, he checked my insurance and gave me a sticker. Didn't check blinkers, wipers, headlights, horn or brake lights.

One year I had some front end damage and I had the headlight removed, the guy told me to put a flashlight in there and he would inspect it. I did, and he did lol. I can't imagine trying to pass emissions and all that crap.

lady at DMV "ok,... looks good, heres the new one with your name on it, want a plate too? "
me "sure, heres my proof of insurance"
lady at dmv "yay, heres a plate"

the end

maybe i mis-spoke about the 30 year law. I was under the impression that that was the case but I guess it was the case at one point and then got changed???

Anyways, GL!

If you move to So.Cal just keep it registered in the state you came from and never change your Driver's license. Stay in touch with friends/relatives.

Mines registered in the boonies in Tennessee. There's no emissions there. Last time I came home I saw this redneck with a life-size tonka truck shooting flames out of his open exhaust pickup - in the middle of town by the police station.

It's kinda silly that California isn't more hobbiest friendly. It only leads to blackmarket smogs and circumvention of the law.

please dont take this as being critical to Californians but why is it you california guys always roll over and consent to the illegal search of your private property. by allowing them to pop your hood. I realize california is really really really strict on that stuff but you are still guaranteed your constitutional rights and 4th ammendment guarantees your protection of unlawful search and seizures. Regardless of how big a state is they are still not above the federal government. there have been many lawsuits against officers and their departments for such violations.

Because if you don't let them they'll just impound our cars anyways....... I seriously think our law system is out of control. When it comes down to it.....we really dont have a chance because at the end even if you fight it....your spending time and money and then when you testify or whatever.. its your word vs the cops word. And the judge always says this. "I have no reason to doubt the officers word, therefore your guilty."

Yea, I think for us to change anything out here it would take years...and years. Cali is just a wreck. Its just ridiculous because We have Lifted trucks out here with entirely tubbed chassis rollin around with modified exhausts....and because their American cars cops dont give to effs about it. Yet us enthusiasts that who enjoy our machines and commute through the canyons for the sake of enjoying these machines (that were built for such) get pulled over for having a modified exhaust. And it doesnt matter what were doing...because the cop can think of any excuse to pull you over. Your car is too low, your license plate isn't in the middle of your bumper..... your windows are tinted, incorrect lane change.... Blah blah blah. I used to have a integra gsr turbo...and I seriously got pulled over at least once a month. Thankfully never got sent to the ref... but still. Not all of us race....and in my opinion as long as your car passes the sniffer at the smog station there should be no limit to changing stuff around. If your not ruining the environment whats the big deal? oh well...just me ranting..

In my state, all OBD 1 cars no longer have to pass a sniffer test. There is technically a visual test but the smog inspectors don't know or don't care about EGR, evap systems, etc. So all they check is your headlights and other safety items. Last year I actually 'passed' inspection with 110 octane leaded race fuel in the tank...

the inspector knew the deal I'm sure, he just didn't give a ****
