CA Daily driven fd, looking for big hp

I was wondering if its possible to get 500+ hp while passing Visual and emissions tests in cali. i was also looking into an ls7 swap and was wondering what all you need for that. it is my daily driver and any input in what my best option would be appreciated.

As far as the 500+ WHP, the answer is NO.

The LS7 swap, search.

Short answer is hell no, something more like 300-350 wheel hp is more reasonable. You will not get by visual and functional CA emissions unless you have a stock-like turbo configuration (OE twins or BNRs or Knightsports, etc.) with all your emissions plumbing hooked up to a stock-like airbox/IC setup and a good cat converter. And I agree with the 500 hp daily driver comment, you can't keep your foot down for more than a second in a car with that much power w/o risking getting in trouble with the law, esp. around So CA.

W/o a engine swap of some sort you cant get 500hp on a 13b and still pass visual(let alone emissions), read the stickies/faq for all your answers.

I don't even have that much power and I can't pass emissions test in CA, going fast is fun and all but the only time I was ever in a situation that I could use it was in the mojavi desert. and gunning it from light to light is just too much gas to spend for how fun it is.

I have been driving my 405 hp LS6/FD in california since 2004. It has been inspected and passed three times since i completed the swap. Regulations on engine swaps have changed since 2004, its now easier. You no longer have to put all of the evaportaive emmisions crap from the doner vehical on your fd. Meaning you can just leave the FD fuel tank and FD charcoal canister in factory position and be done with it.

An LS7 should give you something like 450 rwhp legaly!!!

If I were just starting with my car now I would definitely go the route of trying to get maximum power out of it while passing smog/visual. Unfortunately now I'm too far down another path but I can still pass a sniffer (barely). Although I tend to be optimistic about the rotaries, I don't think you're going to be able to reliably put down 500 hp without some non-street legal modifications. I bet you could pass a sniffer, but you won't be visually compliant.

Since when? last I heard the 25 year law was revoked and only cars predating 1975 are smog exempt. Everyone post 1975 will forever have to pass smog.

Has things changed now?

There is no rolling emissions law in CA. As mentioned, it was revoked many years ago.

As for the original poster, have you even driven a 300 whp FD? It will not be slow.

When I had my FD in Cali, I was with stock twins and intercooler, only with an exhaust and basic bolt ons. I got pulled over all the freaking time and had my hood popped at 75% of the time. A cop even wrote me a ticket for having aftermarket cams because he said he knows when a car is modified and especially when they have aftermarket cams. i told him it was a rotary, his response, tell it to the smog ref.

As soon as you even blip the throttle, I promise you will have cops pulling you over until your head spins like in the Exorcist movie.

CHP Cop: You know why I pulled you over
Me: No officer
CHP Cop: Because your tail lights are smoked

CHP Cop: You know why I pulled you over
Me: No officer
CHP Cop: Because you do not have a front plate

CHP Cop: You know why I pulled you over
Me: No officer
CHP Cop: Because I saw you shoot a 4 foot flame out your exhaust

CHP Cop: You know why I pulled you over
Me: No officer
CHP Cop: I saw you racing

CHP Cop: You know why I pulled you over

CHP Cop: I know your car is modified, I am going to ask you to pop your hood
