CYM project update, floor, firewall and front end test fitted

Check out page 2, as usual it'll take ~1hr for the site to update.

http://community.webshots.com/album/89560034SgoVwL

The floor is screwed in for test fitting. When they start welding it in they remove the screws and weld the holes.

The front end is just clamped on the car and it's fit will be fine tuned when the laser measuring system is attached to the car. Upon first measurements the car was only off 1-3mm (~.040-.120") which is within normal tolerance. They still work to get it as close to perfect as possible. The *average* car is actually 7 cars measured and those numbers averages so most cars will be off even if they've never been hit. Anything over 4mm is not acceptable.

Before he welds anything the fenders, hood, headlights and bumper will be fitted to the car to verify laser measurements. Notice the floor and firewall flanges have been painted with a silvery paint (Zinc). Zinc paint is conductive so he can weld through it.

Holy mackerel. Where do you find the time to be doing this? Are you independently wealthy and bored?

That is just bloody amazing, Jeff. It's almost like seeing one being put together at the factory!

It's also incredible that relatively thin sheet steel can be stamped and spot welded together to make a VERY strong assembly. That just blows my mind.

The floor is a new part from Mazda believe it or not. There were none in the US and only 5 left in Japan. It cost $650 including shipping (10 days).

I didn't weigh the chassis, the front end structure weighs about 75-100 lbs, the floor probably weighs 40-50lbs.

I added some more pics on the last page, the front sheetmetal was test fit today and the car is getting welded up as I type this.

The front sheetmetal fit great!

Nice Job, but how much would something like that cost to be repaired?

I wish we lived closer. I've done the auto body repair thing all my life. We have both resurected a FD. Mine was burnt and I put it back together with a wrecked one. The parts car was unrepairable. The drivers strut tower was drove in about 18 inches.

Anyhow, nice job! Wish I had the time to do the same.

Tough question.

Parts not included, $7000 paint and labor, then I have to reassemble it.

In the end it'll be cheaper than a compareable condition CYM. I haven't run across a CYM that didn't need paint or that the owner didn't want $20K+ for it.

I just got back from Singapore today (first overseas trip!) and stopped by the shop to take a few pics after I got back. It looks like they made some good progress while I was gone.

The car is all welded up and 95% stripped to bare metal. The pics show a lot of bondo but in reality there is very little, just a skim coat to fill door dings and minor imperfections.

We were actually pleasantly surprised, based on the condition of front of the car, the rest of the body had no crash damage at all.

New pics on page 3.

From the begining.
