I am keeping this one, otherwise $$ wise it would be a complete waste of money/time.

I went to Singapore for business, sitting on an airplane for 14hrs sucks!

Wow, nice work. Curious is that your shop or are you paying someone to do the work for you? Either way, it looks like one of the cleanest body shops I have seen- and I have been around a lot of them over the years!!

The floor is screwed in for test fitting. When they start welding it in they remove the screws and weld the holes.

The front end is just clamped on the car and it's fit will be fine tuned when the laser measuring system is attached to the car. Upon first measurements the car was only off 1-3mm (~.040-.120") which is within normal tolerance. They still work to get it as close to perfect as possible. The *average* car is actually 7 cars measured and those numbers averages so most cars will be off even if they've never been hit. Anything over 4mm is not acceptable.

Before he welds anything the fenders, hood, headlights and bumper will be fitted to the car to verify laser measurements. Notice the floor and firewall flanges have been painted with a silvery paint (Zinc). Zinc paint is conductive so he can weld through it.

Hey Jeff,

Been there many times and yes it does suck sitting on a plane for that long! Glad you made it back safely. BTW the progress on your CYM looks good!

Hey Jeff,

Just curious if you were planning on keeping the front end stock, circa '93, or perhaps updating to the '99 spec.....

Good work. It's cool to see every part of the car from inside out. I am on the same boat as you but I didn't have to do any repairs, just restoring. Check out my site and you will see what I am talking about. When do you think you will be finished? Are you in a rush to get it done or are you going to take your time? Good work, wish I had the skills to do that kind of work.

I checked out your site, looks really good!

I'm always in a hurry to get this stuff done. The car went into the shop on July 2nd, work didn't really start on it for almost 1 mo. Once he got it on the frame rack he has to hustle, time spent up there is $$ and he's got to get it done and off so the next car can get up there.

To be clear, I'm not the guy doing any of the welding or painting I'm just the guy paying for it. I will be reassembling the car though.

It was primered this weekend (I hope) it should be completely painted within the next 2 weeks. It'll probably take me 1-2mo to put it all back together.

How much did this all cost? When the car is done I'll probably have lots of hours and $15-17K into it. The car will have a "reconstructed" title so that is a bummer. All the other CYMs I've looked into were either $25K+ and needed paint or they were ~$15K and put together from parts.

BTW, if you find an example that contradicts the point above please don't point it out to me now.

Nice work as usual, Jeff! Too bad our bumpers are plastic... otherwise you could finish off the Delorean look.

The car is primered now.

The whole enchilada:

The latest pics:

To answer an earlier question, I was thinking about going 99+ front end but decided to pass and stick with the stock bumpers. I LIKE the 99 front end but I hate the plate frame. I know Pettit makes a 99+ copy in fiberglass but I'm not willing to put a fiberglass front end on the car.

It will have a Mazdaspeed hood on it though.

The front end was prepped for painting, I snapped a few shots this morning right before paint.

Check back tomorrow, the engine compartment, firewall and floor (inside and out) were painted today with the best paint in the world! BASF Glasurit. It took 3 quarts.

4 coats in the engine bay, 3 under the car and 2 inside (no one will ever see it...).

Check back tomorrow for some YELLOW pics.

Hey Jeff,

Look's good so far! Let me know if you need an extra pair of hands to put all back together. I owe you one, two or three :-)!

Richard.

Thanks Richard,

I'll give you a call if I need some help or if you just want to come by and look at it.

Oh man I'm getting excited! The car got some yellow on it finally. Man I love this color. Follow the link for the latest pics.

Painting should be complete in 1-2 wks. Thinking about it the painter has tons of parts to paint, headlight covers, mudflaps, R1 strut brace, mirrors, mirror bases, bumpers, hatch, R1 spoiler, etc all have to be painted separately.

I attached a few before and during pics.

Hey man, it took me over a week to paint a single guitar body!

Glad things are going along nicely. Is there a mica coat on what you've shown so far? It's hard to tell -- it seems most cameras don't pick the mica very well. All the CYM pics I've seen (other cars) all look like semigloss yellow.

It does have mica in it. It is hard to tell in the pics but the front is very glossy, the interior floor is effectively a semi-gloss. It only has two coats of paint and the painter added a flattening agent to it.

You definitely get my awe and respect on the level of work that's going into this. I certainly have been known to pull things apart before, but replacing floorpans is certainly beyond my area of expertise (not to mention motivation).

Thumbs up wow....

wow, congrats on resurrecting another RX-7. i don't blame you for not wanting to sell it. Just wondering, how do you afford all of these projects? (as in, what do you do for a living). Keep up the good work, and congrats once again.

I don't keep all these FDs. I'm going to sell my red R1 I've owned since 1998 when the CYM is done.

that looks damn good Jeff. The car has come a long way.

Wanna free flight and place to stay in SF and wire up my car after I paint the engine bay? You are the FD master.

Looks wonderful man. I know you'll be excited when its done.

It does suck thats its going to have to keep a rebuilders title though since you've put so much money in it.

With everything you've already done, it wouldn't be a stretch to just shave the plate holder off the 99 spec front end and have a plateless urethane bumper. Either way its going to look great.
