CYM not a three stage?
CYM not a three stage?
So my 93 cym fd is in the shop to be repainted. I am keeping the factory yellow but the painter at the shop told me cym is indeed a 2 stage paint despite all the reading I've done. So I called both ppg and mazda and they confirmed it is a 2 stage. I feel like everything I've read about cym is a lie

if you scroll to the back, it gives the formula, and i may be reading this wrong, but it looks like its two stage... its a color coat, and then a tinted clear. i'm not sure if there is a clear over all that.

I suspect Dupont was the supplier of Competition Yellow Mica Tri-Coat. I have not been able to locate exact information, but you will find many references to the color with the last keyword. Dupont still makes a Tri-Coat and can provide Mazda Paint Code J9.
Here is the Tri-Coat repair procedure from Dupont's website.

And here is the colour report listing Mazda J9 and availability as TriCoat:

Basecoat, midcoat and clear. The previous owner of my car had it repainted and mentioned to me the trouble he had in getting the right amount of midcoat for the right shade. Then tons of clear over so he could wet sand the paint job.
Just my opinion and you what what they say about that...

Does mean my car won't look the same? I'm pretty inexperienced in the paint world and keeping the yellow strictly for the rarity but I want to look right. My shop told me they are using ppg waterborne. And he said the pearl is mixed into the yellow with a clearcoat

It should look fine, OHSA and EPA regs have changed most all autobody shops to water based finishes. You'll be fine.
