Custom exhaust, made by me

k, well i searched it, but i cant find it, so sorry if this has been takled about before.

im a poor 17 year old with a 3rd gen. all the money i do make goes into payments and insurance and gas. so im looking for cheap mods, i know thats impossible, unless you buy stupid **** from the fast and furious collection, but im not just another rice wannabe 17yo.(obviously if im commited enough to be able to buy a 3rd gen) im mechanically inclined and a quick learner. so here is my idea:

would it be dumb for me to make my own downpipe back exhaust. i want it to be 3 3/4 inch or 4 inch. i want as little back pressure on the turbos as possible. *stock turbos, and i also plan on adding a safc, this should be ok for the fuel sys right, assuming that i just do a dp back exhaust and intake for now? oh and i have a hks dp* since no one local has a pipe bender that is big enough *that i could use for cheap or free* i was thining about just taking a long piece of straight stainless pipe and cutting angles and welding it together. would the sharp angle changes be restrictive? or would it be ok?

any info will be greatly appreciated. thanks!

sAFC wont be enough for the fuel system, also I believe anything above 3" would be wasted on the stock turbos, but dont qoute me on that one.

If you want some good mods to do on a 3rd gen do this:

Koyo/Fluidyne Radiator
RX7store.net Downpipe
Hose Techniques Vacuum Line Kit
------------------------------------------
This will be about 600$ total but will be worth it in the long run as the engines vitality will improve. The Downpipe resolves a major heat issue under the hood while adding some good safe HP to boot.
Either make a 'poor boy' intake or pickup a used one in the FS/FT forum like I did.

I think you will find this to be more than enough to satisfy your hunger for a few months. Later on when money allows -- get an upgraded intercooler and cat-back exhaust... pickup an M2:Stage3 or Pettit Unlimited ECU and the car will feel 'just right', atleast it did to me.

fuidyne rad is coming withing a month or so. and im giong to do the silicon vacs as soon as it gets back from the body shop. *i bought it with dented fenders and stuff* I plan on getting apex'i intake. i already go a hks dp. and uh...it has a cat back apexi N1 on it, but the can is kinda rusting a bit. ECU and IC and turbo upgrade and fuel inj and pump are later, maybe next winter. im just shooting for a bit over 300 hp for next year in spring summer fall. maybe 320.

the reason i wanted to go so big was so i could get that done and out of the way. do it right the first time and you wont have to do it again.

thanks for the comment janus! anyone else have an idea

I recommend not spending any money modifying the exhaust system except for the downpipe. DP is the only exhaust mod that will make your car more reliable (thereby saving you money in the long run). Stock muffler is good for at least 260hp, which is much more than any 17-year-old should have in the first place. Adding power will make the car more difficult to control, which is the last thing you need.

Unless you've got some sort of racing experience that most people your age lack (Gran Turismo doesn't count), I advise that you find your local SCCA chapter and learn to autocross. The odds are stacked against you: most people your age will crash an FD3S within a year of owning it. Learning proper driving technique is only half the battle; you've got to be responsible enough not to push the car on the street.

The 3rd Gen is a beautiful car, but it almost handles too well: most people don't find the limits until it's too late. The proper way to learn the limits (both of the car and the driver) is to surpass them in a controlled environment, where you can spin without hitting guardrails or other obstacles.

Don't be a statistic.

Scotty's comment is the best advice you could ever get. Too bad that odds are against you actually doing what he says.

Now to contradict his statement, if you are looking for performance at a low cost, get the cheap bastard intake (in the parts for sell section of the forum) rather then the apex. I had the HKS intake and found the performance gains of the C.B. intake to be better. And also a lot cheaper.

Keep your eyes peeled and you can find parts for cheap. On the forumn, ebay, website specials, etc.

Really listen to scotty, go take the classes. I plan on taking these classes this coming summer, until then I am taking it easy on the car, it is more then most can properly handle.

I'd save my money and stick with what you've got for now. Hell I'm 27 and I've only got a DP on my car and it's more than enough power for me at the moment.

Find a local SCCA or NASA region and start autocrossing, then you'll want to drop that money into suspension and sticky tires.

99% of the people that own an FD are not capable of exploiting even 1/5th of its ability. Learn to drive the car first, then worry about going fast.

haha, thanks guys. but im not a regular 17 yo. i promise. i know every 17 yo says that. but do other 17 yo's work 30 hours a week and get straight a's in 4 AP college level classes? most dont. i sound like a cockly little ****. i know. but i am responcible and i have a pretty good idea of what the cars limits are, and i know that my skills are not at the level where i should be pushing the car to its limits, so i dont. i dont do stupid stuff like drift on public roads or race cars on streets. thats retarded.
and with parts, i guess going the cheap way and buying used stuff is one way to go, but i learned this thing of spending more money to buy the better product and be done with it. thats why i have an rx7 instead of a civic.

thanks for the help and advice though guys. but i would really appreciate more advice on the exhaust system. maybe i wont mess with it. and concentrate more on suspention? i dont know where i should point this boat, but thats why i came here. thanks guys!

oh yeah, i forgot to mention, this isnt my first car or anything, i had a 1990 TII before this fd. i know that the fd is a big jump from the fc, so you dont have to tell me that again. but i am familiar with how a performance car feels. i estimate that the fc had about 230 hp? maybe 225? something like that. and i did drift around cones and stuff in parkinglots *that i had permission to* to find the limits of it. i knew that care pretty well, i drove it from march till just a few weeks ago

thanks,
nori

Don't mod your car at all. Your little exhaust mod will lead to a huge chain reaction of mods. You won't be able to stop modding, and you will run out of the money you don't even have. The FD is fast enough bone stock. Keep it that way until you have the money to do otherwise.
