Lightbulb Wow...

I didn't realize there would be this much interest in it, but I'm really hyped about this now...

OK, here's the story behind this ... on the very first day I got my FD, I stopped by McDonald's and got a value meal which came with a drink. I wasn't familiar with the interior of the car, so I started searching for the cup holder to put my drink and I actually got pissed cause it didn't have one. So from the very first day, I said when I come up with an idea to solve this problem that would not deter from the sporty interior, I would do it. This may or may not be an original idea, but I did search all the well known RX-7 sites and have yet to find anything similar to this mod (if anyone knows of something similar, please let me know so I won't take full credit )

Anyway, just a few details ... it is a single cup holder that is permanently mounted in the center console just behind the shifter panel (the empty space between the seats). The technique I have developed makes it possible for me to complete this mod in less than an hour (minus curing time). It is simple in appearance and looks as if it was there when it rolled off the assembly line. I will post pics of the completed job to show the professional quality. For those that know me personally, know that I don't half-step when it comes to my ideas, designs or creations.

Any other details will be ironed out after I post the pics. Thanks for everyone's time and interest.

I'll be interested to see how this works out. I too have found it annoying using the 'crotch mount' cup holder!

Here's mine. No need to modify interior, holds drink perfectly and slips right in and out.

I have the same one as fumanchu. It is ~20.00 from Griots Garage. I went to home depot, got some 1/8 inch aluminum stock, bent a U, cut it and used weatherstipping adhesive to attach it to the holder. Working fine.

Wow, I was really shocked when I saw how many people were interested in this. I figured he would get flamed and the thread would die.

I have 2 cup holders in my car. Part of an awesome mod called the daily driver. Best mod I ever did.

I daily drove my car for 9 months so I know the feeling. I was just thinking if someone is that adamant about getting cup holders in their FD they must not have another car for DD responsibilities.

I didn't get pissed when the FD was put out without a cupholder because it's a bare bones sports car.

However, I had always thought that that space between the seats was perfect for a single or double drink holder, just molded into the console there. However I have ZERO experience with fab'ing anything like that up. lol.

I'd be interested to see how it turns out.

UPDATE:

After putting the prototype through the paces, I'm not satisfied with the bond of the adhesive. It would probably hold under normal circumstances but I want it to be indestructible. I will post pics of it but the final version will be the same in appearance but a lot stronger.

I've always taken great pride in pointing out that my ride has NO cupholder! Maybe I am a little strange, but it pisses me off when people drink, eat, read, talk on cellphones, put on makeup, etc. when they are supposed to be driving.

(I will admit however, that having an ice cold beer on a long boring trip is refreshing, but I gave up that behavior about 25 years ago.)

Wait, my mascara is running...

My cup holder is from a Saab 9 3 aero, I mounted it right above the glove box. I have no airbag, and it did require more fabbing/ cutting than I would have liked, but even in it's unfinished state, everyone who has seen it has said that it is the coolest cupholder they have seen.

Ditto...if need be, my passenger is my cup holder/extra storage area haha. Man he hates it...

That reminds me of Bad Boys...when they're in the Porsche in the beginning, and Martin is askin Will where the cupholders are...and he's like there aren't any...it's a limited edition. Martin's like 90 thousand dollars and you ain't got no cupholders? DAMN RIGHT it's Limited!

While it can be convenient to have one, I'd be very weary of actually using it, given how bumpy the ride is, how hard I tend to corner etc...something's bound to spill sometime...and I..WOULD...KIRK!!
