Crooked Willow intercoolers...another run

Well,

I have been dealing with Duane at Crooked Willow with my dual oilcooler install and he has been nothing but helpful.

I have been debating intercoolers and REALLY like the way the Crooked Willow fits.

I do remember the old post about the lack of ducts...

But his support, at least for me, with second hand oil coolers has been great if not prompt...

He told me the next batch for the intercoolers should be finished in about a month...

What kind of info do you have to back that up?

Bob, did you read Crispy's write up on his CW IC? Seems like it took a helluva lot of effort to get that to fit excellent. But once installed, it looks awesome.

Yup Cavellm,

I did. I noticed with my RX7fashion box that there is more room in the front to slide the fusebox to the left...I think this will let me fit the larger duct...though still will need the smaller hawker odyssey battery if I don't want to do a relocation.

Plus my front bumper is Fu*&ed....So I don't mind cutting it.....this is temporary as I plan to go to the 99 spec in the future.

About the fan shroud, I hope that isn't as much of an issue with me as I lowered the fans with the new widefoot mounts and did not have as much clearance problems...

Plus the IC is slightly bigger than the M2large...and well different...not alot of people have it...and from what I read about in old post from crispy, the pressure drop is low....

I had Duanes intake and the fit and quality was a joke. I could have made a better box out of paper mache'.
His IC's look fine. Just a core and someend tanks, kinda hard to screw that up but he duct is a POS and is super flimbsy.
Also when I delt with duane my experencies were less that impressive.

He never returned a call and charged me more than was quoted. Not to mention that the part took nearly 2 months to arrive after I payed for it.

Does anyone know the price of the CW intercooler? There are no prices on his website for the intercooler.

He told me they should be like they where before around a hundred less than the M2...but he is waiting to see what the labor cost are...

I just love the way it looks in crispy's car...fitment could be a bear....especially the pipe from the turbo...as crispy custom did his...I just hope it clears my rx7fashion airbox...

Yea..but I figure what some people go threw to get a front mount to fit that this shouldn't be that hard...just have to be patient...and creative like Crispy...part of the fun isn't?

For me the two biggest issues is the turbo inlet pipe and fuse box...

the rest I think I can play with

$100 less than the m2 and that includes all the piping, duct, couplers, etc, etc?

If so, I may consider that as well.

7racer,
I went through the ordeal of installing this thing last year. The IC is nice but the duct and piping are halfway designs.

Your Rx7Fashion airbox should be similar in size to my M2 aluminum box. The relay box won't fit moving to the right side of the car, it still hits the IC duct. Good news is I was able to wedge mine in place above the top radiator inlet. Must remove IC to open the relay box but no cutting wires.

Since the M2 airbox is wider than the CWR airbox the IC core is shifted to the left side slightly so my Hawker PC680 mini-battery had to be relocated.

Next issue is with the core shifted left, the pipe that feeds the IC is crooked but wouldn't line up correctly without modification if straight. Not a big deal since I wanted to keep my Efini y-pipe, bought a u-bend from Burnsstainless and made an S-pipe like Crispy.

The pipe from IC to throttle body elbow is kinda short, use 3 in. long couplers.

The mounting brackets for the bottom of IC that attach to the car's front cross brace, one was welded crooked. Nothing a big hammer can't persuade.

Now for the rotten, stinking duct. After looking at Crispy's write-up I still thought I could get away without relocating the radiator and condenser - no dice. After cutting the fan shroud support and trying to massage it in low enough to clear the hood, I ended up lowering the radiator and condenser. BTW, this was with Wide Foot sway bar mounts.

Lastly, my a/c dryer had to be relocated more drastically than Crispy's for the duct to sit low enough. Its original mounting bracket was cut off and a new one made to secure it lower in the nose. Be careful bending those metal a/c lines.

PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you some pictures if you want.

It was as much work as a front mount which I don't mind because I wanted to stay stock mount and eventually add a vented hood, which should give the performance equal to FMIC but without blocking the radiator. I do mind how this kit is advertised to work with all intakes with no relocation of mini battery and relay box. Its advetised as a drop-in installation, which is certainly not the case.

If I had to do it over, I would have made my own kit. The core and piping is easy and I could have spent my time designing a duct that fits instead of relocating everything around a poorly designed duct.

I wish I could tell u how great it performs but my car has been down since Oct. 2001 and I've been enduring a nightmare with one of the forum's most well-respected engine builders.

Three engines installed at my expense (thank god I do my own labor) and the car has not left the garage (first motor didn't even start becasue coolant came out the exhaust while being filled). This saga will soon be published for the forum readers to be warned since said engine builder agreed to a full refund back in February and is now ignoring certified letters.

Rotary Extreme V mount

How about my V mount? It flows 935 CFM instead of the 17x13x3.5" core's 745 CFM. You won't be worry about cutting up the fuse box or anything like that. It works with most aftermarket intake such as HKS, Greddy, M2, Pettit Racing, etc. Of course, it will work the best with the newly designed V mount intake. The fitment is guaranteed.

For more info, go to http://www.rotaryextreme.com/vmount.html.

Thank you.

I really like that idea, but would hate to spend so much $$$. Especially after I just put in a Koyo rad less than 6 months ago for $400

Oh well, best products do not come cheap, especially I have spent a good 6 months to perfect that setup.

A extra couple of hundred dollars will get you something with the newest and latest concept and technology that really works along with easy installation and good customer support.

I can modify your koyo if you are really interested. PM me for the price quote. Thanks.

I do like the split on benefits between stock mount and front mount. Especially in Texas summers.

Chuck,

any new temp data with your setup??

Especially, after letting the car sit and heat soak, stop/start traffic etc?

I was seriously contemplating your setup too....decisions!

I have been following your post on the other forum....

Cavellm,

if you are going to have the whole engine out for a rebuild, fitment...might be easier...

I know that someone on the forum had made some ducts for the Crooked willow people without theres....I wonder how that fit?

I'll try to email Duane to see if anything new has changed with the duct design...

PVerdieck: We eliminated the AST on my car but Chuck adds a bracket for customers that want to keep it. As far as temp data for the v-mount, I'm in the process of ordering guages to collect all the data anyone would ever want to have a serious discussion of the merits of the v-mount. Tom
